Discovered yesterday that my vehicle battery is completely flat. I believe you can charge the battery in place but there is conflicting information in the vehicle user guide about whether you need to disconnect the battery first. Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.

With old fashioned battery chargers you will have to disconnect the battery because you may damage the vehicle electronics.

Modern smart chargers are safe to use with the battery connected.

However smart chargers do require some volts in the battery being charged for the charger to start up and turn on.

With a very flat battery the only option is to start the charging with a basic old fashioned battery charger.

Smart charger will be ok all connected,if your battery is below 11v it may never fully charge and fail some time later, esp cold weather.

or connect to another battery with jump leads and the charger will instantly start .

Flat

Yes that's an idea.

The question is first why is it flat, are the cells damaged, jump starting would be OK but danger of damaging leisure battery if that's what you intended. If you are not confident about state of battery charge by standard charger.
