With old fashioned battery chargers you will have to disconnect the battery because you may damage the vehicle electronics.

Modern smart chargers are safe to use with the battery connected.
However smart chargers do require some volts in the battery being charged for the charger to start up and turn on.
With a very flat battery the only option is to start the charging with a basic old fashioned battery charger.

I have done it loads of times don't really need jump leads just 2 thin wires with crocodile clips ,Yes that's an idea.
