Park n ride

Thanks wooie you've come good again
You can come to Scotland anytime you want:banana:

If the barriers won't open because of the late hour I have seen vans overnight in the entrance road on the Yellow lines.

Go past Canterbury towards Dover on the A2, come off at the slip road for BRIDGE, go over the road bridge and keep right, and right again towards the City and about a mile is the Gate Inn and it is left past that with a roundabout . Dead easy that way and not traffic in the city to get lost in.
Just remember to KEEP RIGHT, or you would end up on the slip road to the A2 London bound.

Canterbury P&R

Hi
It used to be open all night and you could come and go as you pleased then last June the powers that be decided to close the in barrier at 8-30pm, you can use the out one at any time, if closed park in the far corner of the car-park at the pub and leave early in the morning, if you are there before closing time have a pint, we are on our way to france next week.:dance:
Have a good holiday and safe travels. :goodnight:

Why oh why oh why put yourselves through all this grief (!)- if you are going to France anyway, just get into France and more or less park where you like (apart from Calais maybe), at whatever time you like, what could be easier??! It's a no brainer really.

Where's your sense of adventure!dont want a boring trip a wee bit o this n that keeps the spice of life going,we only drove from west Lothian no big deal just a pity the traffic/roadworks were bad, done this trip many times and still enjoy, when the kids were small the hol, started at the depart from house, made up books and they got points for spotting, trains, planes, helicopters, stobbart trucks etc,
Now it's just me n her indoors and we. Now play spotting,Costa,Starbucks etc only in jest.
We luv this like this,07.30 sitting in canter having a cuppa, next a wee drive to Dover onto tug then sun, sea, soap n drink, think I've missed something here it don't look right?hope I've not bored you el:blah::blah::blah::D:D

I was aware of the 8:30 cut off and had previously stayed at a CL near Canterbury but would consider pub car park in future. Intending to travel down in a day from the Kingdom to the P&R and spend next day in Canterbury as I find it a lovely city. Short hop in morning to ferry and off we go, roll on September. Definitely a no brainer.

Now that I find a splendid idea, but we would only do it the once, far too many other places of interest to visit for us.

I fully agree with you young man - but what I am getting at is if you heading over the cut anyway why spend your whole trip down to the ferry worrying about where you are going to park in the UK.

The Swingate on the Deal road, just off the roundabout at the top of the Jubilee way at Dover just before the hill down to the docks it is about half a mile off the A2 and is on the POIs as a pub stop. This is probably the nearest wildcamping POI to the Eastern Docks, about the same as Marine Parade. No traffic wardens looking to book you.

Your argument is OK if you live close enough to the ferry. I have a 500 mile drive and I find where to park much less worrying than whether I will get to the ferry in time. There are lots of options to park other than park and ride, but if you miss the ferry you are Jack Brooked.

We give ourselves plenty of time to get to Canterbury P & R and set off early aiming to get down there approx dinner time / early afternoon.

A nice leisurely breakfast ( bacon butties ) on route starts the holiday off perfectly and even the smell of them makes me happy

That way if there are hold ups on the motorways etc. for what ever reason it doesn`t matter.

If we feel like it we`ll jump on the bus and pop into Canterbury and have a look round.

If not it`s a lazy afternoon checking everything is ready for the next days ferry and chatting to others on the P & R

The next morning we`ll make up some sandwiches etc. ready for the 12.00-ish ferry and leave the P & R between 10.15 and 10.30.

We buy a brew on board and eat our dinner at the normal time whilst enjoying the view from the window seat we normally get.

When we arrive in Calais ( 14.30-ish their time ) we are freshly fed and watered and then it doesn`t matter what we do.

Either a long drive or a short hop to Grand-Fort-Phillipe as we did this time because we`ve never stayed there and wanted to have a look.

This is how we do it and it works for us

I`m not suggesting everyone does it this way as others needs differ for one reason or another.

I`m just chucking in my two-penneth

Yes I agree, and I had taken that into consideration, certainly if you live North of Brum you have at least two chances of serious delays on your journey, one at Brum and the other at the M25. Also if you use the Eastern route missing out Brum then Canterbury would be a perfect choice. Even when we set off (South of Brum, just) we are usually concerned about what the M25 has install for us. But I am still of the opinion that if you are worrying all the trip about whether you are going to make it to Canterbury before they close (what is the point of that anyway (??), ours here in Stratford is closed on Sunday as well (!!!???) and where is the sense in that), then if you have battled to get to Canterbury anyway you might as well do the last few miles to the ferry/ tunnel and be done with it.

Another overnight stop we have used at Dover is DOVER PATROL where there is a monument to the Dover Patrol boats from the war, don't mention the war hee hee on a clear day you can see France , the ferry port is a short drive away, the road in to Dover Patrol Monument is a bit bumpy.

We are lucky in that we cam get to Dover/Folkestone in 2 hours so can get a sensibly timed and priced ferry or train to Calais.
We could easily drive a good way before camping but we stay here.........Accueil. Less than 30 mins from Calais little Bar/Bistro on-site (not always open)
Very friendly owners and locals

For those coming from ( a lot ) further afield it seems to me to be better to have a relaxing no time pressure drive by staying At Canterbury or the like!
