Camper vans no longer welcome at Mumbles car park

Thanks, Rob. We attended a [straight after] post Covid Informal Gathering [Rallies were still banned at the time the 'Fancy seeing you here!' Event was arranged] at Hawick, where we were allowed to stay for 4 nights, Free of Charge, and where the Tourism Manager turned out for every one of the 40 or so Motorhome Arrivals, and delivered individual Welcome Packs, visiting each day of the Gathering. The 'Free' 4 Days resulted in proven Tourism Expemditure [because the Gathering Organiser and the Tourism Manager wanted to make a point to a sceptical Councillor, so all receipts were gathered in daily] in excess of £4,000, so over £100 per capita for a 'Free' weekend, in the Pub/Restaurant and individual shops who were just reopening after the Covid restrictions. It was a superb Gathering, as you might expect after lockdown!

Steve

I've just had 3 nights away at Slapton Sands in Devon Steve, and ironically the car park where we used to stay has a barrier. I know I said that I will not stay where we are not welcome but we were meeting friends and I like the pub where I have also made friends so I made an exception!

Whilst there I paid £22 in one farm shop, £42 in another, £43 in a nearby Sainsbury's, £150 in the pub and £128 site fees - a total of £385 over 3 nights. Take away the site fees and it is still £257, not a fortune but multiply that by the amount of people these councils deter and it mounts up. Pubs and other businesses are struggling at the moment and need all the custom they can get.

Don't - I repeat don't! - try going head to head with Rob when it comes to drinking!:oops:😵
I witnessed a few trying to so this once at a Midlands meet a few years back and boy! did they ever suffer day after... 🥴😵‍💫🤮🤢🤣🤣🤣

This man is a world champion and you will lose big time. You have been warned... 😉 🙃 😎

Mind, similar can be said of oor Wully! 😜😁
Remember a certain Scottish gentleman ending up in a big ditch ( 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫🤕🤕🤕 ) after spending too long one night supping with the Big Man - I know this because I was the one who rescued him out of the ditch! ;) :ROFLMAO:🤪🤪🤪🤣

... and Stonedaddy.... well, Stonedaddy is another one who used to have massive hollow legs and total immunity!:cool::cool:

Although what this has to do with Wales and the Welsh and their car parks I haven't a blinkin' clue! 😁 😂 😜

If you don't end up in a ditch, was it even worth going out. :ROFLMAO:

Getting back to Wales though, I do vaguely remember a roughly 4 mile walk from Beddgelert to Llyn Gwynant taking about 5 hours after the pub. A ditch or two may have been involved.

So have the local council indicated what alternative and “appropriate” arrangements have been put in place to allow motorhomes to park in the area?

There seems to be a trend of restricting parking in certain areas to vehicles under a certain height whilst not offering up an alternative nearby parking location without height restrictions.

Sadly Marie the beer hits me a bit harder these days, Diabetes is taking it's toll and I tend to get woozy after a few. Don't get me wrong, I still drink as much as I ever did it just affects me more.

Yeah, Wully, Tom and of course Sam - there's 3 blokes who know what their gobs are for!

I honestly don't think they care.

Local councils can often be pretty parochial.

As for them having any vision as to how they can help local businesses continue to make a living, it's often a case of dream on.

Sustained campaigning a la CAMPRA is probably the best way to go to stop this happening, or bring about a better change in local council attitude, but it can be a hard slog and a long game when you're up against closed minds and (often) vested interests 🤷‍♀️

Moped when I read a post like the OP I take it very personally. I see this as an infringement of my civil rights.
But sadly others don't, and this is why councils like this overstep the mark with impunity, and get away with it.
No reason has been given for this draconian measure, other than to state that we are "inappropriate"
This car park is owned by you and I, its been built, maintained and run using our money.
Hence why banning parking in public carparks requires a TRO under the 1988 road traffics act.
The TRO has to be justifiable, and the relevant body who decides have to feel there are grounds for any restrictions.
But barriers don't carry the same requirements, and I feel they are used as an easy way out by such councils.
It seems nonsense that any restrictions must carry a TRO, but barriers don't fall within these restrictions.

But at least we don't have to read the usual dire tripe about cassettes being emptied willy nilly, us assaulting wardens, or us behaving badly.
Apparently being inappropriate suffices here. Also its heartening to read the comments from the locals who seem bewildered by what's been done.
What's required is for barriers to fall within the road traffics act, and for them to be made part of any TRO.
And for this to be retrospective with regards to existing barriers, which restrict us on the whim of some councillor or local nimby who have nothing better to do with their time.

Its clear that the pub spending outweighs the food bill, this of course is correct and normal. 😂
