Busted wing Mirror

Update on the Mirror, I have today removed the mirror assembly and find that the actual mirror housing only has two entry holes for the arms and that the rubber seal just spreads across the back of the mirror using only the two mouldings round the holes to grip and seal, not a continuous circle that I was expecting so that makes the whole thing much easier , I had to dismantle the door trim to get at the cable joint, to free that ,only 3 bolts hold the whole assembly to the van so that part was simple.

Both of my mirrors have a plastic insert that sits between the two round holes so that the rubber sleeve sits in a grove the whole way around.

I obtained a mirror assembly [ new ] from E Bay £89-99 due tomorrow free delivery so weather permitting, [ nice day forecast here ] so with luck I will fit it tomorrow, Mirror Man wanted a lot more money ? thanks for all your help and advice.

Thanks I have noticed that on my mirror.I like the reflectors you have fitted too.

I put them on after the drivers side mirror was taken clean off on the second day of first outing in it when it was just a week old :mad2:

A young boy in a tractor and trailer piled high with manure came off the Tore Roundabout just north of Inverness too fast and the trailer started drifting on to our side of the road.

I`d already stopped at the entrance to the roundabout and i couldn`t get any further over because of telegraph poles and BANG off it came, the little git didn`t stop and by the time i`d have turned round he was gone.

The small orange ones are stuck on with some Sikaflex i had left and the large clear ones are drilled and bolted on using A2 stainless nuts and bolts.

David, mine and vindyboys wing mirrors are mark 2, X244 models ones without indicators. It`s the mark 3, X250 models that have the indicators built into the end of them.

They ( both the main mirror and small wide angle mirror ) are however electrically operated / adjustable and heated which is were the cost rockets.

I kept the broken sheered off mirror for spares because the 2 separate motor assemblies and inner subframes are intact. The main mirror also survived.

Precisely, mine are fixed as well and work perfectly well without any electrical adjustment, once they are set in the correct position they don't need any more adjustment,I haven't moved mine for about 3 years.

At risk of being labelled a luddite I don't think that electrically adjustable, heated mirrors with integral side markers are necessarily a good thing on delivery vans.Taking into consideration the large amount of wing mirrors damaged every year, particularly the long arm type I think that basic fixed mirrors would be a better option.Still,it keeps people like wing mirror man in business.

I do not particularly want heated and remote adjustment of mirrors either ,but that is what was fitted to my van when I bought it, so one replaces like for like, I seldom move my mirrors either as once set that is where they stay, but it is nice to be able to change the rear view as required remotely when reversing into tight spots or where there may be a post or other obstruction in the line of reversing that may not otherwise been seen? although I have not had to do this to date.As with all mechanical things if one does not move them occasionally they will seize up.

A heated glass would cost more than pennies compared to a non heated, as heated glass will require a switch with warning illumination, cabling fuses and heating element too??

the first time I took my van out I drove too close to the hedge and a branch ripped the glass out of my wing mirror on the passenger side. I went to Halfords who did not have an exact match glass in stock so they taped a piece of glass of a nearly similar size in there and it has been there for - 18 months...... I changed the tape once ... cant see any reason to spend fortunes on getting the right one... can you ?

New vans are likely to have blind spot warning lights in the mirror too, possibly the sensor for these as well. I like the way manufacturers think. "Let's put all these gadgets in the most vulnerable of places"

Well my broken glass has a printed circuit on it's back which is the heating element, I could of course just stick a non heated mirror in it's place if I was worried about the cost which I am not, but unfortunately for me the complete mirror assembly is smashed beyond repair which means replacement which is on going Tant Pis.

well in our road close to town which is a one way street you can spot the non locals as they dont fold in there mirrors thinks hardly a week will go past and you will spot mirror glass on the road .we have a plumbers merchants at the bottom of the road plus we have speed bumps but we still get plumbers vand doing stupid speeds and the delivery lorrys creeping down the road and they can be artics sometimes .I did on one occassion park the van at the end of the parking on my side it narrows a little but they couldnt get the lorrys down so caused major problems and the lorries had to be reversed out lol serves them ight for taking out mirrors not saying they all doit but some of them do and dont stop

Just received a mirror I was waiting for but NOT the one I ordered, so now we wait some more GRRRRRRR so no go out in van as I have taken it all apart , was hoping to go to France next week for a few months wander, so that is on hold oh well the weather may be better later.

Oh that's sickening after sorting a replacement and getting the wrong part and all the trouble now to return it. I saw the picture of the damaged mirror and agree a replacement is the best option but I wonder if a repair could be carried out to the damaged one perhaps there's more damage than can be seen in pic but some plastics can be welded or maybe a bead of something like sikaflex/stikall would hold it together.

what a sod..... is it possible to do a temporary sticky-tape lash up with a basic glass-only mirror and get the real part posted onto you to Europe ?

Bloody annoying isn`t it :mad2:

I`ve just found out that an item for the motorhome which i bought and paid for on pre-order in mid March and was due to be out for delivery on the 30th March has probably now been knocked back to the 12th April at the earliest :mad2:

They haven`t contacted me and only found out by accident by going to the website and checking the delivery status.

That has bolloxed me up completely because we leave home on the 13th April and sail on the 14th April.

I`ve just spoke to them on the phone and they don`t seem right bothered, if i don`t get a definitive answer by next tuesday i`ll cancel and ask for a refund.
