FLAT LEISURE BATTERY

Hi,
Bought a new 2016 4 Berth Burstner Ixeo IT 726G last Mach.
Been having trouble with the leisure battery since we first got the van.
Took the van down to the dealership, asked then to test battery as some thing is
draining the power out. Tested the battery informed us that nothing is taking a charge out of the battery. But the leisure battery could be faulty the dealer replaced the battery under the warranty. That took 3 months to get the new battery installed.

New battery flat as a pancake in the first week, back down to the dealership.
FOUR HOURS later the head auto ( TECHNICIAN ) said that he had found the fault.
There was a fault in the wiring to the electric step for the side door as we did not have a step fitted to the motorhome he had just taking out the fuse, job done and sorted.

I wish, the fuse was for the *CD Player & satnav.
Head TECHNICIAN ) then decided that it is a faulty relay switch to the cd player, and will be replaced under warranty.

Two months later, we have to phone them up to ask what is happening about the relay switch.

Burstner head office, had emailed the dealership to inform them that the drain on the leisure battery is normal happens on all Burstner motorhomes.

All Burstner motorhomes ( IS THIS NORMAL CAN THIS BE TRUE )

How come we have not read about this on any motorhome forums.
Would very much like to hear some views on this.

Sounds like you have got the same problem I have. in my case the problem is I have a euro 5 engine that has a smart alternator that drops the output voltage down as low as 12 2 volt ,this cuts out charging to the leisure battery..I bought a couple of voltmeters that fit in the cig lighter sockets so I could monitor the alternator output while driving .The idea is when you go up hill the alternator shuts down to save fuel then when you go down hill the alternator increases the charge rate .All this magic is controlled by the ECU .Sterling power products now make a . Battery to battery charger designed for smart alternators .Their is some information on you tube, search for !! sterling pro charge ultra 1230 battery to battery charger !! THis may or may not be your problem .I have been to Citroen dealer they say the alternator is ok ,been to my motor home dealer they say motorhome charging is ok .But my leisure battery dose not charge properly .

Hi Norman 64, we have a 2016 Burstner Elegance i745G, we have only had it since October but have done 3000 miles getting as far as the Costa Blanca. We did put in a second leisure battery and added 2*100 solar panels. I don't want to tempt fate but so far the leisure batteries are performing as well as I had hoped. I hope I havnt now jinxed myself.

Does your leisure battery deteriorate even when 12v is turned off on the main panel? I would expect the main vehicle battery to deteriorate slowly particularly if you have an extra alarm fitted.

Hi Molly,

Hi 5andy,
Sure you wont have jinxed yourself, lovely motorhome you have. Are you still in Costa Blanca, if you are I am jealous.

Hi Saxonborg,
Battery still deteriorates, with 12v panel turned off, as we said its a ongoing problem.
Have no extra fittings, all wiring factory fitted.
Run all kind of tests, the leisure battery is connected to the cd player .villa the relay switch on the front of the dash board.
This switch is to allow you, to be able to run the cd player & satnav from the ignition key or the leisure battery.
Head technician, been back in touch with us coming up to our house Saturday 11th to run some more tests.
Think I need to get him to disconnect leisure battery form relay switch, retest battery to prove its the switch.

Have you tested the drain with an amp or multimeter ,a flat battery in a week is a huge drain ,mine is 0.02 amps ,small coach-built..

Sandy and Chris got on ferry around 07.00 hrs this am from dieppe heading for newhaven.

Yes Norman sadly no longer in Spain, in fact in Cricketers in Brighton watching the rugby. Come on France! Hoping you get your battery probs sorted out.

Hi we have a Burstner, yes there is a very small drain on the battery as it does run down. But we have left ours for several weeks and it's still ok but does need topping up. Longest I have left it is prob 5 weeks without any EHU, I don't have solar.

Hi Molly,
We have run all the testes, we know what is draining the battery just have to get it sorted under the warranty.
Faulty relay switch to the cd player,

Have you disconnected the battery a left it for a week to see the power level?

Hi,
Yes we have done that, we know the fault.

But from one ( LAIRD to another LAIRD )

Head technician, been back in touch with us coming up to our house Saturday 11th to run some more tests.
I am confident it will be sorted out , got over my little rant. Dummy back in pram now.

Faulty relay switch to the cd player,

I sympathise. My previous van had a similar problem but it was the vehicle battery draining. I took out every fuse, one by one, and couldn't find a problem. In the end I paid an autoelectician who found some DIY wiring that connected the radio/sat nav direct to the battery with no fuse....and the unit drew current even when turned off.

Most modern Radio / Sat Navs require a connection straight to the battery but should be through a fuse. This makes sure that the unit remembers all the radio channels you program in it and where you are when you stopped on route. Take away the battery and you loose it all. the 2013 Swift we had had a small red button on the lock. When you pressed it the key went back one more notch and then it switched off all the power and the radio lost all its presets.

The way these modern radio's work is by using the ACC Line. This used to be available from the steering lock or as part of the wiring harness. If it is not available then the radio / sat nav does not know that the ignition has been turned off and it does not go into the low power mode. This is probably why your Radio / Sat Nav was draining the battery.

With all the electronics now fitted to modern vehicles the ACC line may not be available and a separate unit has to be bought to match the vehicle CanBus. My Laika is Fiat Base and so needed a small box of tricks to supply the information from the Can Bus. The CX-401 gives Steering Wheel Control Outputs that the Blaupunkt understands along with the ACC output that switches the radio into standby mode. This ACC output also tells the radio to switch off when you take the key out.

..

The Pilote Motorhome we had used a two diode system with the radio connected to both the leisure battery and vehicle battery. This did not switch itself off when you took the key out and you had to remember to turn the radio off otherwise it could drain both batteries.

..
