Brit Stops?

I bought one this year another member recommended it the book itself is you’re membership card you’re supposed to show it when stopping at one of pubs hotels. Never used it yet but I’ve read through it and there’s some nice places to stop mainly in England Scottish stops are quite scarce. Don’t think I’d pay money again most of the info is out there on inter web free.

We joined for the first time this year. We've only stayed at a few of the pubs listed but all were welcoming and none put us under any pressure to buy anything (as is required under the scheme's code of practice). It is a bit disappointing that the vast majority of listings are pubs. I was hoping for more farms, vineyards, breweries, distilleries, marinas and such like.

been a member almost since it started and agree a lot off the information is out there and more and more landlords are expecting you to dine, personally will always go and have a few beers and if it suits me eat in the pub, other side of the coin i’ve gone to pubs from it and they have given ehu as well even though not neededall in all would sooner put £50 over a bar than £30 over a reception desk one nights stop pays for the book so no biggie , stopped at a couple on way back from banham happy to pay to have the choice

We have been members since 2013 but despite trying lots of stops, are largely disappointed with them. We probably found 5 or 6 that we would return to, but most of them were awful. It seems to us many join the scheme just as added advertising with no real access or parking for motorhomes.
We won’t bother renewing.

We too have had one for a few years. Before I came across this wonderful group, we were recommended by a friend to sign up to Brit Stops, and even now it is still useful. We have stopped at some wonderful farm shops, tea rooms and even a vineyard over the 4 or 5 years of motorhoming. That said though, I stopped the automatic renewal last year. W.C. is more than enough for our needs

We were members for a couple of years and stopped at some nice locations. As has been said WC has it's own pub stop database so I see little point in renewing.I have found plenty of pubs that will allow you to overnight if spending 50 quid there. When I was a member of brit stops none of the places asked me for the membership book anyway.

We found the same. Pubs are ok if you spend but the free beachside and layby stop overs are pretty useless and at times dangerous. we stopped in cornwall by a beach and got hassled by a neighbour that lived 50 yards down the beach at 6 am walking his dog. Why he banged on our van was a mystery, but he reckoned it was private land and thought we were gypsies. Some of their laybys are uneven and just roadside stops with traffic and lorries to bother you. A load of stops are pretty much out of date and no longer available so we wont be staying with them, in fact the books no longer in the van, we use the different apps to get ideas and go from there.

I tried it several years back and got a free extra year because of all the problems i had at the stopovers in the first year.

The second year was just as bad with being turned away or expecting us to spend money in the bar / restaurant.

The guide and website clearly say that the first night is " obligation free " but we didn`t find that was the case.

Before all the usual mob come on saying we SHOULD spend money in the establishments, if that is the case they should not advertise first night obligation free.

Hi I’ve bought book Quite a few times. Won’t be buying any more. It’s been useful but now is a PIA. They are behind the times. Emailed and said sorry I won’t be renewing next year - are they having an app but no response. Most people would just leave but I thought it was worth an email as to why I’m not renewing. I did say I’d happily pay for an app as it’s so much easier to keep up to date.

We have had no problems with ********* and didn't feel compelled to dine or purchase goods although we did so voluntary, simply because we wanted to. Could we do without it? Yes, of course we could but it is an additional resource for some interesting and unusual places, like a micro brewery farm just outside Warwick to name but one.

That was my idea as well Ral but it went wrong from the very first one we tried :scared:

The Trossachs Wollen Mill turned us away because the manageress hadn`t told the staff that they`d joined the scheme ............... allegedly.

The second one ( same trip ) Charleton Fruit Farm, Montrose said they had no knowledge of the scheme and no we couldn`t stay on their car park.

Apparently i`d caught them on a bad day with coach parties coming and the stand in manager didn`t know about it.

Next trip The Rhug Estate, Corwen similarly had no knowledge of the scheme and wouldn`t let us stay,

The contact names at these venues were not available as they were all on holiday :rolleyes2:

Same Welsh trip The Salutation Inn, Pembrokeshire said yes we could stay but wanted to know what time we wanted the table booked for the evening meal.

I said we woudn`t be eating and he seemed surprised saying everyone who stays eats in here and even sent a young waitress out to ask what time we was going to eat.

Sounds like this particular source has outlived its usefulness .
Bit concerning [but hardly surprising] that people expect to stay on a pub carpark without buying anything in the pub

great idea but very poorly managed.

Then if you are expected to spend money in the pub it should say that on the website and in the book in which case they are not free stopovers.

The Brit Stops code of conduct states:

Your overnight stay is free and

The Brit Stops scheme allows for a stay of 24 hours

If you are required by a host to spend money during your first 24 hours at the venue then the host is in breach of the code of conduct and I'm sure the scheme organisers would want to know about it. They can be contacted on info@*********.com

Having said all that I would personally always buy something even if it's only a couple of drinks.

P.S. I find it very irritating that this website is set up to censor the word B-R-I-T-S-T-O-P-S !

We've stopped at all the places except the Welsh one,no problems at all, felt welcome no pressure to buy.We prefer the farm shops because always need food but only bought if it was what we wanted.
Try it for a year, leave it till next March now, that's when the new book comes out

It’s always amazed me that people have said that there is no obligation to buy anything from the places listed on ********* ?
I couldn’t not .
But having seen a few motorhome owners at work nothing surprises us anymore.[/QUOTE

Yes indeed its nothing to do with 'expected' or 'required' ! Its , at the very least , good manners .
Pub provides overnight parking space , you buy a couple of pints . Its what makes the world go round

At the very least Licencees are risking there licence in England and Wales at least with our licensing laws either hard up or ignorant of the laws

Brite stops aren't bothered not them that lose the licence, I also note Bugsworth basin got caught out after a complaint by a disgruntled local and I have not one shred of evidence any motorhomer assisted in their defence the were left to hang.

I would organise a pub meet once in a while but an overnight stop on an adhoc basis no way. There again I would expect customers to show a little custom rather than use and disappear which from these hallowed pages happens often

Channa

I think its good to have as much info as possible, I never stick to any plan I make so checking stuff out before i set off has its limitations. A book is handy if you dont have the internet and phoning ahead may well take the pain out of turning up and finding the site has some issues. Ive only used it once and it was fine in a situation where the POI site was full, can see no reason why I shouldn't use it again.
