I've just measured the actual power taken by the SWMBOs hair straighteners and the results are quite surprising.Hi Kerrycamper
As a fellow GHD user, I went down the leisure battery and inverter route. This runs my hairdryer and GHDs. My leisure batteries are attached to 2 x victron solar panels (I’ve got a large rig), but the leisure battery/inverter option is well within your budget. I appreciate you stated you wanted a portable power pack, but thought I’d mention this anyway
Their stated wattage is 42W but as they warm up they actually take a whopping 675 Watts!
I tried them on a smaller 600W/1200W peak pure sine inverter and it just wouldn't cut it.
These are not GHDs but are a set of Remingtons and they actually took 75 seconds to reach temperature, I'm just thinking that if GHDs or any other manufacturers for that matter heat up quicker than 75 secs then they'll probably take even more power!
So whether you go down the portable power pack route or the inverter route make sure you choose an appropriate output capability and go with a pure sinewave too as there's some quite complicated electronics built into them.
