As Elaine just pointed out, Rob, HMRC are allowed to miss their, ahem, 'targets' by 100% or more [until the 12th of never, and that's a long, long time ...] with impunity, but there is no discretion or tolerance for us, as the taxpayers whose taxes help to fund the bloody incompetents who are employed to deal with the taxes, if we need to miss or extend a deadline - and, with the 'additional taxation Notices' to collect the underpaid tax because the Chancellor has continued to freeze the Personal Allowance, the existing staff will be inundated with queries and payment processing [and how will HMRC implementr the waiver of tax collection for Pensioners whose sole income is the State Pension - divert existing staff to the task?] - there is no leeway at all! I would describe HMRC as an absolute shambles, but that requires the institution to be 100% inefficient, and they can't even stoop that low ...

I don't pay a penny on my State Pension. That is because the robbing barstewards pay me less every month. My Mrs and I (due to our age) are still on the old payment system. Anyone retired but younger than us gets a pension of £12,570 (assuming full contributions) while we get an annual Pension of a lesser amount. We are allowed a tax free allowance of the difference, amounting to not a great deal. :rolleyes:

Update: Received a 1/2 automated reply but with a link to the HMRC App that doesn't require the full ID Process of Passport & Driving Licence that the HMRC System seems unable to verify. The App says that it can display my Tax Codes that they told me 2-3 weeks ago had changed. So I checked with the HMRC App and found the Tax Codes screen - that's the good news; the bad news is, despite being emailed 2-3 weeks ago that my Tax Codes were changing, the App has only the 2025-26 Tax Codes available ... No sign of 'the recent changes' ....

There is, however, a screen that allows me to switch off electronic notifications and to receive paper copies of my Tax Codes by post, so I should, eventually get the updated details in printed format. What ever happened to 'Tax shouldn't be taxing' slogan from the TV adverts?

Its actually fairly easy all that. I'm semi retired but still have to submit tax and VAT returns online. Dead easy although the new up and coming quarterly submissions might be a bit of a PIA at first.

That's not quite correct, when I retired the pension was calculated under both the old system and the new system, due to my payments of 'graduated pension', SERPS, etc, the pension under the old scheme was higher than under the new scheme, so I'm paid the higher amount, at the moment that's over £13k.
 
I have been unable to track down any HMRC or DWP sources of diesel fuel at any price, so there could be problems ahead.

But, retired or not, the fiscal drag caused by the continual, and continuing, freezing of the Personal Allowance means that if you have a full State Pension and some £22.50 per annum of other taxable income, you will end up with a Tax Payment Notice towards the end of the 2026/27 Tax Year. And a number of Financial Analysts/Advisers/Experts have pointed out that a large proportion of State Pensioners are unaware of the accumulating tax liability, and will have insufficient spare income or savings to make the payment, especially if the Trump lunacy forces the average energy bill to increase by £160 per annum wef July 2026, plus the increasing cost of living generally and the extra expense of higher petrol/diesel prices ...

Some filling stations in France have experienced high demand and queues, and a few are out of stock of certain fuels. There are various websites providing details, but my understanding is that all are obtaining their data from the government, so simplest to go to the horse's mouth: https://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/ which shows filling stations, prices and any out-of-stock situations.
 
What is even more galling is that when my wife died last year I not only lost her pension but ended up paying more income tax because I lost the allowance that you can get if your wife hasn’t used up all her allowance and to top it off I got a demand of the pensions people for a weeks pension that they had overplayed my wife.🙁

If you where married prior to 6/4/2016 there would normally be payment of up to half your wife's pension, so you need to check what you might be due.
