Anti virus Protection

I totally agree.
Despite what Mr Soda says I haven't had a virus or any other issues on Windows (7) for about 15 years. On my Linux systems I have several lock-ups and crashes since installing over christmas.
What distro are you using and what is the pc spec,by the way windows turns of all you installed protection each time you update so they can spy on you and lift data to sell on.

Spec as per screenshot.
Windows spying, does not appear to be a problem on Win 7which I shall use for another couple of years. I sall be installing Win 10 on my photo editing machine in the next month or so and see how it goes - no information of any use to them will be found in that install.

As I used run my own computer and telephone company I moved to Windows 10 the day it became available. Like everything else it's a bit different at first but I wouldn't go back to Windows 7 again. I use the Windows 10 built in AV and like Phil says a bit of common sense. I've had no issues with viruses. One thing to do in 10 is stop it installing updates automatically, I find it will always do them exactly at a time you don't want it to

Regards,
Del

I use Avast They bought AVG a while back. Yes it costs a few £££ but its amazing. Easy to use, web cam blocker, anti virus, VPN, real site checker, firewall, data shredder, password locker covers the laptop, mobile and desktop.

you will never get an definitive answer to his one but working in IT I find the best solution if your running Windows 10 is keeping it up to date and just using the Windows 10 Defender AV. Also worth having the free version of Malwarebytes but not running automatically. Just a scan ever couple of weeks as it will pick up stuff AV wont, dont download loads of free crap off the internet willy nilly and thats it.

I stopped using mint as i to had a few probs a few years back,do you have a nevada card in it as there were issues, thats a good pc and should run lite or zorin sh-t fast.
Win seven has been dead for a while and dont put it on the net,and yes all windows including 7 had spy ware.

It's shown in the spec as an AMD Radeon HD graphics card. Win 7 was easy to de-acivate so called 'spyware'. I tried Zorin but didn't like it was going to try the Enterprise version but didn't want to pay for it up front. If I change from Mint (which I quite like despite it's issues) I shall try and find a distro that my bloody scanner will work on.

All hp stuff works plug and play,i thought zorin ok and have it on my lads pc,took a few hrs to work out how to resize icons etc but all ok now,the 5 year free distro is out now.
I use lite but there are a few tricks to learn, num lock must be on to sine in and do updates plus clean package files.
What i have found is that many people have a pc and no clue how it works, many dont know that you can change the opp sys and think windows is the only one which is built in from new.

Not quite, my printer is an all in one HP printer/scanner. The printer installed very easily and was there right from the start - me very impressed. Several months later on I still can't get the scanner to work, one of two reasons to keep my win7 install.

Many many thanks for all the replies

I think I will stick with AVG but get the cheaper ebay version.
Its perpetual "nagging" to clean up my system is a minor pain and I simply ignore that aspect
My system FLIES with only the OS and low capacity files on the SSD disk.."If it aint broke dont fixit"
I have use both Sophos and ZoneAlarms both good but haave used AVG now for 4 years so...keep it
The IRISH solution of Linux may be good but I have some windows TOYS which I need and like
IN particular talking to TOMTOM and associated tasks..AGAIN they work 100% in Windows !

My usual analagy is with cars
Level 1 Ford Vauxhall Nissan etc
Level 2 Merc BMW Totota Jaguar
Level 3 TOO expensive
Worth paying a bit for level 2

I think I hardly ever see what I would call a proper Virus infection these days. The latest versions of Windows 10 and other OS systems are constantly being updated to protect your systems. The main thing these days is compromised email accounts, Phishing and cyber crime etc. Anti Virus wont stop you giving your details away accidentally or falling for a scam. I do see machines getting riddled with PUPs (Potentially unwanted programs), easily removed with Malwarebytes usually, Browser hijacking etc but I Cant remember the last proper "Virus" that trashed a machine or attempted to.

The big scam a while back was the email going round saying the fraudsters had hacked your computer and had webcam footage of you watching porn etc and demanding $2000 not to send it to everyone in your contacts list. It was convincing as they showed you your password, or "A" password probably they got from some site or other you signed up to that had a data breach. I do know a few blokes that were taping their webcams up over that one though :D An even worse one is the tech support calls scamming you into thinking you have a virus infection, remoting into your laptop and then charging you £400 for fixing a none existent problem. This is where its at now, scams not viruses and AVG, AVAST or Defender cannot really help you much there. Its down the the users to be alert.

Linux lite or zorin 5 year distros out now 32/64 bit,all built in,just add privicy badger and add blocker from menu, this is all free or you can donate a small amount to the distro builder which i do,gave up windows after xp and all the spyware which is embeded.View attachment 82793View attachment 82794

Old PC's and linux is all I've used for years, XP was the last Windows I ever bought. Linux does everything I ever need, coding, web, video and photo editing and all totally free.

Barryd, You have hit it on the head for me. Its not the technical scam, more the gullibility to think you will get something for nothing.

When you installed linux mint did you download the restricted extras, they cannot put them on the disc but ok to load when setting up as connected to the net,you have to do this with most distros, also turn on firewall. ;)
The printer and scanner will work ok in lite as thats what i have.
