I don't think the older diesels were quite so bad for NOXs. Loads of smoke particles though and if you also smoked that probably accounts for the 'noxious state'.. Increasing efficiency started to push temperatures up a bit and that does increase NOX.
I'm not so sure if that is true, but it's possible. Modern diesels do burn at a higher temperature, and diesels are lean burn, creating the NOx.
Lean burn petrols which have been tried in the past create as much NOx as diesels.
