A near miss?

How high is your standard Sevel PVC? The figure I was given for my van height is 1.6m. I've no idea where that figure originates from or if it includes the extra height of roof lights or solar panel. Anyway driving through Cherbourg this am at the very last minute I managed to switch lanes to avoid an underpass which belatedly showed a 1.6m height warning. Nearly sh-t myself. Anyway, I certainly wasn't going to risk it in a stream of traffic moving at 50kph.
But would I have been alright?

You might have been alright.
The van would have suffered.
 
I'd of done the same, avoid, with shrinkflation things keep changing.
I got stuck in Rouen for about an hour last year, they had closed the road around the 2.2 meter underpasses near the center, all diversions sent you to these underpasses, including my sat navs(I found out , just going round in circles 🥵). with no city map and little chance of following one anyway as I was alone at the time I eventually, desperate after driving along bus lanes and through the bus depot, looked up to see where the sun was in the sky it was the afternoon and just kept heading the best I could towards it which took me out of the city to the east and finally round to the north back towards Dieppe. Didn't miss the ferry though 😃. no traffic violation tickets arrived in the post either.
 
Always worth getting a tape measure out and checking.
I also don't trust all height signs after getting jammed in a car park, van was lower than height stated (but not by much 🤣 ) went under the barrier, and then got jammed. Fortunately it was a VW T3 pick up and was only the ladder rack that hit the roof.
