A controversial question

mikejay;814017 Picked up a tomtom truck after a kind member let us know about a very deal so will be trying that out this year. Mike[/QUOTE said:
I bought the same Truck 6000, I love it and I always swore I would only stick to old Tomtoms

Some great replies, especially growing rhubarb :lol-053: I phoned TomTom yesterday enquiring about the latest technology and because I had a One XL he said I qualified for 30% discount on the new Go5200 which has world maps and free data sim for life. After discounts £210 so maybe I'll just go for that.

How many frig arsing times do I have to post this?

DO NOT BUY A NEW TOMTOM IF YOU WANT TO USE POI'S

I think I'll try a Garmin next, an earlier poster mentioned about 'basecamp' feature where you pre plan your route then upload it, sounds good... IF it works.
The first Sat nav I ever had was a Garmin in 2003, it was some kind of prototype and was infuriating to use. I ended up smashing it up in a fit of rage in Manchester. I had about £750 invested in it with the stand and SD card, damn it felt so good giving it what it had coming for months :) I swore then I would never buy another Garmin but maybe enough water has gone under the bridge now :)

Why Manchester ?

I've got a Pioneer Avic built in jobbie in my new van. It's a great bit of kit but it's manual has more pages than the vehicle's manual. Tail, dog etc.

Looks like using a sat nag is going to be part of the revised driving test.:drive:

The best value I've found is Nozatec, good size screen, good mapping, free updates, easy to load POIs and all for about £30!

I bought a Nozatech and found it totally useless, yes it has lots of really nice features but my broke after just 2 days and if you look at the amazon review page you will find that I am not unusual in being dissatisfied, it seems that they either work brilliantly or they dont work at all in approximately equal numbers.

it is also rumoured that the software is pirated - not saying that it is or it isnt but the updates come from an importer of womens clothing so draw your own conclusions!

I'm using the tomtom go mobile app on my smartphone and have been very pleased with it.No problem with screen size, overheating or discharging contrary to some misguided reports on here.
I do have a tomtom stand alone satnav as a backup just in case I lose the phone or it goes faulty.I also have copilot downloaded which used to work for me but after the latest update which changed the UI significantly I now prefer the tomtom app.

For the last 6yrs I've used smartphone based sat nav.1st CoPilot but presently using Navigator with free offline OSM maps. Very easy to customise & over the years I have noticed marked improvement with these smartphone sat navs.

Yes, but check the version number; you may be using the same already on your satnav.

Yes, I think they are the same maps as I already have. I use mapsme so does that mean That must mean that Noza Tec is the same brand as mapsme or navmii

That is the only thing they are. They are very out of date and they lack the vital .ftr files, but they are for the software used on Nozatecs. Don't bother with them. You can get 2016 Q4 files with no bits missing if you know where to look.

Why not tell him where to look then?

The choice between dedicated satnav or phone seems a no-brainer to me. If you have a smartphone and don't mind inconvenience and a tiny screen, use a smartphone.

You seem to have a fixation on size and battery life, this may not be a bad thing, but you are applying it in a totally illogical way.

I have three satnavs.
A 5" TT Via125 which is out of date but I keep for the way it displays poi's.
A 5" TT 5100 which is always up to date for maps, traffic and speed camera's (with it's own sim) across europe and can be loaded, at no extra cost, with maps from around the world, but is a PITA with 3rd party poi's.
I then have a 6" screened smart phone, this can be loaded with worldwide maps at no cost, but cannot add 3rd party poi's, but it will keep going for hours on it's internal battery, way beyond what the TT's last. It may be that I could add something like copilot to phone for poi's but I haven't bothered.

Have both an iPhone and iPad with CoPilot but prefer Tom Tom with hands free phone and traffic updates
