I had big cebie lamps on my tuned imp when 17 to 19 years old, no street lights here and dark as hell at near 100 mph. 😂

We try to avoid driving at night, can't enjoy the scenery when it's dark, but on occasions when searching for a wild spot down country lanes a bit more light will be useful.

I was thinking the same, but being ever the tactful decided not to tell the OP to get his eye's checked. 😝

Yes, agree. Eyes, like the rest of the body deteriorate with age. That's why I have reqular eye tests and have done for many years.
 
I'm short sighted and wear varifocals. I also have poor night vision these days. My optician was explaining how varifocals are always a compromise. For best long distance vision in poor conditions he advised single strength distance lenses only, ie ones that don't gradually transition into "reading" lenses at the bottom. I've now got some like this and the difference it has made to night time driving is astonishing. Everything is so much clearer. My night driving confidence has increased significantly. Granted the in-car/van dials are slightly fuzzy, (no close up reading area on the lense) but who cares? I'm happy to trade that for being able to see at night again.
 
I have a pair of varifocal glasses specifically optimized for driving the van which also have coatings designed for best nighttime performance, the lenses are made by Seiko, and I can thoroughly recommend them. It probably helps that the optician I've been using for the last ten years is the best I've ever used and is a fellow motorhomer, he has recently retired and I'm hoping his son is just as good.
