For purpose of length regs the term used is a motor vehicle so doesn't matter what prime mover as the max length (outside of STGO) is 18.75mtr where prime mover weight is less than 3500 kg then trailer max length is affected so only 7mtr allowed over 3500( so hgv) then trailer can be 12mtr...

If you were a rigid then 12mtrs is max . unless 2 axle bus 13.5mtrs or 3axle with rear steer 15mtrs but as you are a car drawing trailer (not a semi) then its 18.75mtrs so you have loads to spare . My RV was 12mtr so max trailer I could tow was 6.75 :)

All iveco dailys can pull a 3.5 tonne trailer , even at gvm , and handle it well from my experience . They are also rear wheel drive which is a big plus for towing , especially when heavy . Dont forget to factor in towball loading when loading prime mover to gvm .

Using a jake at low rpm and load can harm the engine , an exhaust brake isnt very effective at low rpm either , but is quieter than a jake , Telma retarder or hydraulic retarder are silent but more expensive .

You should descend in a gear that doesnt cause the engine rpm to go into the red even with a slight application of the brakes now and then . as for gears downshifting to slow no longer taught by car instructors. and with hgv its use of endurance systems IIRC
