Hi all. Today whilst at work I have to rush to find a fella who could be in dire straights. I work in mental health. I have a clean licence and a sat nav to warn me if I speed. Im driving along a quiet B road rushing to this house, when the police pull me over. Apparently its a 30mph road yet my sat nav says 60. I had a look under the new speeding fines and points system. Apparently im a band B speeder. That's 100% of my weekly income 4-6 points and even a disqualification! Holy ****! And all I was doing was rushing to this fellas house. It was an honest mistake and look at what can happen. I might even have to go to court. Crap! I didn't even know of the new speeding stuff introduced in 2017. Im a very honest person but it makes no difference. So be warned.

well opt for court experience and plead your case it could be worse or could be betterit is your decision at the end of the day as you thought his life was in danger

How fast were you going?
I drive for my work but take no notice of what the sat nav says regarding speed limits. Lucky you weren`t doing 60 as I thought twice the limit was an automatic ban.

Not that I have that much faith in Uk Justice

But go to court / appeal.
You may not overturn the conviction.
But they may reduce the penalty.
Remember to declare any points on your licence to your MoHo insurers.
Yes a double whammy !!!

Defence options are limited. if you are summoned to court and can demonstrate losing your licence affects others i.e a carer then perhaps a bigger fine

If you state need a licence for your job it makes no difference you could lose it.

Not really much to appeal against I don`t think.
If the sat nav said 60 I can`t imagine he was just a couple of mph over the top.

Go to court tell your tale and plead for the courts mercy. You never know, what’s to lose by going. A letter from your employer could possibly help.

My sons friend worked in care at home when caught speeding. He told the court he needed his license to continue to support vulnerable people and he kept his license

I think he means the nav told him he was allowed to do 60, but it was actually a 30.

Hi all. I was doing 43mph. Im no speeder. Like I said its way under the 60 on my sat nav. Copper said I should have been looking at the signs on the road. It was a very quiet isolated road with only a tiny number of houses on it, no schools or old folks homes.

not certain , but haven't you been offered a speed awareness course ? still costs you , but you don't get the points. good option i reckon

That's so unlucky .... but having been sent to "naughty school " for bad drivers 3 times in 30 years i know to my cost that if there are street lights its always 30mph. (unless there are signs saying othewise.) But - it is ALWAYS up to the driver to know what speed limits s/he is driving through all the time. i was only doing 3-4 more than the speed restriction i was driving through. i think there are a number of different %s higher than the speed limit that they can send you to naughty school, or fine you, or give you points or take your license away. i would go to court if it was me. Take evidence with you of the call that sent you on this ill-fated journey. good luck

Have you checked yourself what the limit is? How about posting location? I mean the police are probably right, but I wouldn't be believing them anymore I would a sat nav. I'd want to see for myself.

i have known my satnav be wrong on several occassions... probably because i have not up-dated its database for ages... and things change.... but ... ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law. For sure i would be checking the accurate speed restriction on the road first of all.

Spot on .reliance on a sat nav re speed or its information is not a defence.

One thing the OP can check is if there as been any recent change to the speed limit and is the documentation street furniture up to speed (no pun) so it is enforceable

Have the Police reported you for summons rather than a fixed penalty ? Acourt appearance will result in victim surcharge and possibly costs however the opportunity to mitigate circumstances

43 in a 30 limit is way too much for a speed awareness course .... normally.

It may be offered by a friendly Judge if all the facts are shown. What I would do anyway is to drive that road again with a dashcam running. If the limits have not been correctly shown then that may help (I am aware that a 30 limit does not require repeater signs). It's always worth asking a local if there has been a very recent change to the speed limit there. As they say 'every little helps'.

I dont think i would stand up in front of the beak and say i was relying on my sat nav to give me my speed limits as they are notoriously unreliable.Unless there are says saying otherwise i assume its 30

As far as speed awareness courses go,think its around 36/37 for the cut off point

Hi all. I have just driven the road again. It has only five small houses to the left, its a mile straight, in the countryside, has one small 30mph sign. And heres the proof taken just a few mins ago. I was pulled directly opposite the sign. I can get other mitigating evidence from the fella I was rushing to see to make sure he was ok. Check out the two speed limits.

it doesnt matter how many houses are on a road it has no relevance. What does have relevance is where the speed camera is in relation to the speed limit sign .....
