Millau Bridge

We drove on the road underneath it ( you can see a couple of vehicles on it on the webcam ) a couple of years back on the way to the Roquefort factory.

Hells bells it`s tall :scared:

There's a good visitors centre in the Aire on the motorway over the bridge that's worth a visit.

I went over it last year, don't know how much it cost but it was a lot of coin I kept cramming in until I finally got through,I wondered if I was charged as an HGV. It certainly is impressive but won't be going over it again.

Millau

....will be there Sunday/Monday....Maja

Stunning isn't it? I've had that on my bucket list for about a decade, since friends of mine visited around 10 years ago. One day...

Now I'm hyperventilating!... that's my absolute favourite cheese  I didn't even know there was a place you could visit but that's also on my bucket list now for sure, thanks Wooie thumb.gif

you can see this bridge for maybe 30+ miles away depending on your direction of approach... it truly is a thing of great beauty and skilled design and construction. They built it from each side simultaneously and met in the middle. Brilliant engineering.

I was told British architects did the design work? The first time you see it in the early morning driving down from the north going south the approach is amazing. You see it in the far distance sticking up above the clouds that fill the valley below ( a cold air inversion) Then as you get closer you begin to see just how high it is above the town below. It’s always been pricey to cross. If You take the road down the valley into the town and up the other side to avoid the toll, Millau town is quite a congested place to take a camper through. There is an aire within walking distance near the town that was free but is now charging. The parking at the air is very tight. In my view taking the bridge crossing just once is worth the views and experience. But each to there own. I think there are one or two free wild camping places under the bridge..The bridge visitors center is also worth a stop.

I was told British architects did the design work? [...]

AIUI, it was a joint effort between Michel Virlogeux and Norman Foster, Michel Virlogeux engaging Normal Foster as consultant architect.

FWIW, we've had this viaduct on our bucket list for some time and will hopefully get the chance to check out the visitor centre and cross the viaduct later this year.

Did under and over a few years back, going to the visitor centre under it. British design, French engineering, was a series on tv a while back of great bridges around the world and it was one of the programmes.

Don't normally pay tolls, but it is worth it.Also the drive underneath is worth doing.

This bridge is on my list, but recently had to make do with a trip to the new Runcorn/Widnes Bridge on the day it opened. Lin my wife told I was sad for going to have a look on day one. I was fascinated by the engineering.

went over this bridge a good few years ago,,,,,,,,,,,was not looking forward to it.....(anxiety set in) ......was so relieved when we got to the other side....

a very magnificent bridge tho,,,,,,,,saw the series on tv showing how it was built and lots of technical data.....was impressive.... such a brilliant engineering feat............

it was the highest bridge in the world.....dont know if it still hold that title.

There`s an aire right by the road as you approach the factory and you can do a tour with plenty of taste testing but be warned .................................

The flies are horrendous on the aire :scared: and the road noise is terrible so i doubt you`ll get much sleep :mad2:

The wagons are running constantly and are either accelerating hard up hill or braking hard going back down the hill fully loaded.

The fridges / coolers on the wagons are also running at full bore :mad2:
