Repairs to Claira charging unit

Any advice on getting one of these units repaired, I have a 38/20 Calira not charging on EHU.

The Calira 38/20 is no longer manufactured but A&N keep stock of remanufactured units (does that make sense?).
Anyway, mine was knackered last year and they sorted me out. Important thing is to determine why yours is malfunctioning/not working. It's well worth while reading all the information on their website and then having a chat with Allen at A&N. He's a really helpful guy and what he doesn't know about batteries and charging units could be written on the back of a.......(choose your own small object).

Thanks everybody for your helpful advice, looks like Allan is the man to see, I was just a bit apprehensive as I had phoned and had been told it would be £350.00 to repair it without seeing the unit or anything? The general consensus is Allan is a good guy and I will certainly give him a try. Thanks again to all who answered my post.

Well £350 is a bit of a shocker, Do you know of any radio television engineers who may have a look at it. I seem to remember reading about someone having problems with an Electro Bloc which I think is similar to your Claira getting it repaired by a radio engineer

Second thought if charging all right while engine running why not just wire in a separate charger to use when on EHU

£350 sounds like a lot of profit margin to me!

We build our chargers to run at 100% continuously for 24/7, we don't make consumer kit, even my own vehicle hasn't got one of our chargers, but we expect 20+ years life out of our units, limited mainly by the life of electrolytic capacitors inside them.

Yes Peter, I thought the units would be more robust than that too.
I have a Lister petter engin in my boat a solid piece of kit, only let me down twice due to incorrect bump clearance, fitted the right shims and has not missed a beat in five years.

Hi witzend, I am a bit nervous about letting someone try and repair it, In case it is not successful and then A&N caravans might not be so keen to look at it. I have only read one negative post about Allan and he must have handled thousands of units, but I agree with you £350.00 is a bit of a shocker to the old pension, maybe something was lost in translation.

Hi Donnie,

£350 was the price I paid for Alan to replace my Calira unit earlier this year. I took the van to Conway and the work was done there, including a few other bits and pieces that Alan recommended.

Yes Exchange price on A&N's web site


This I found on another forum ~ I spotted on the Knaus forum that there is someone in UK that will repair the calira unit for around £170. I think they simply replace the main circuit board, but I haven't spoken to them, so that could be wrong.

Check out the prices for Electroblocs. :(

Which is why I advised against you adding more batteries. At least the EBL is a bit sturdier than the Calira and Reich chargers.

Yup, best bit of advice I`,ve been given on here Jim, you probably save me a small fortune, even if the alternative cost me a fortune too LOL,

I had my calira repaired by a guy at Davan caravans. New circuit board plus a cooling fan added . About 3 years ago. Been fine since . Cost 250 quid
