Travel insurance or EHIC, in the past we've always had both to make sure.

Our insurance premium has doubled because I informed them I am taking tablets to stop me peeing every five minutes & Marguerite is taking blood pressure pills, both minor borderline cases but to the insurance company we are on prescribed medication & therefore a much higher premium.

Can anyone out there recommend a reasonable travel insurance company?

Also, I'm thinking of ditching the insurance & just relying on EHIC, what do forum members think of that?

Thanking you all in anticipation, Mike.

Don't do it Mike! I hate insurers but would never go abroad without it, even when I was young.....er than I am now. I used Staysure this time. They say there are no penalties for medication for certain ailments. It's too risky just to go with EHIC. Happy, healthy travels! x

As a person who for past 5 years have dealt with travel insurance claims I would NOT recommend going with just an Ehic , I've seen what the ehic will not cover, I've seen the amount medical expenses can mount up to

Amazes me why people will insure a vehicle but not insure themselves...curious !

Insurance everytime for me.Premiums always seem like dead money right up to the point you need it.

Insurence

Hi

If you keep taking the tablets for your conditions you should be ok. Ask your insures to quote excluding your conditions.

If I got travel insurance I would probably have to sell the van to afford it & even then they often don't cover you for your existing conditions. Been down to Spain for the past 9 winters & only once needed hospital treatment & the EHIC card worked fine. I think that some of the insurances also say that you should use your EHIC card before claiming on the insurance.

Not sure if anyone has noticed on the insurance questions? It used to say 'do you suffer from high/low blood pressure'. If you are taking medication for it the answer would be 'no' as the medication is controlling it. This year the question has changed to 'are you taking medication for high/low blood pressure'. Therefore the answer is now 'Yes'. Crafty sods

Hi Gemani this has interested me. Are you ,or anyone else, able to provide examples of things that would not be covered. I assume there are some rules?

Thanks

It would be really helpful to get some more info on this

If the worst happened you could end up loosing your home, pay the premium its worth it for peace of mind ,check out repatriation costs air ambulance etc..

Yes Molly I understand this but don't we pay these things for other European union nationals in our country. Why is it differen for Brits in other eu countries?

That's a good question ask ukip, I may be wrong but I can't see the nhs paying for an air ambulance and medical staff to repatriate someone to anywhere in Europe.

Hi Molly, not trying to be political nor would I expect air ambulance but would expect treatment in the eu country.
Just really trying to understand rules so we can all make sensible decisions

As I understand the ehic gives you health care the same as a local in the country you are in, you have to pay the same costs as a local it is not always free. In some cases costs can be claimed back in the uk. If you taken seriously ill ambulances may take uk patients to a private hospital then you will have to pay the full cost. As you say you really do have to understand the rules and risks. Bazz

There is an ehic app for iPhone and android and it contains all the info for each country. Well worth downloading and keepin on phone I think .

Don't forget, travel insurance covers you for other, non-medical, incidents.

Ie:- getting gassed and having exactly the cash limit of your insurance policy stolen.;)

I got a reasonable deal from Explorer for our recent trip to Morocco.
A few years ago OH suffered a broken arm in France. EHIC was pretty useless as it only covers the very basics - we had to claim on our travel insurance.

You only get free treatment if locals get it.
I know insurance can be dear
but it is a lot dearer if you aren't insured. We have been with CC in the past. They are very good as we found out.
We have changed to saga recently because of a.cheaper deal.
Don't risk it.
