Italian sostras

I've been told that there are many sostras, or 'picnic areas' in Italy. Does anyone know if there is a map available, a website to go to or a POI?

Web link

Hi,
If you can navigate this website in French it is very useful CAMPINGCAR-INFOS .There are about 1500 in Italy and you can search either on a map or by place name.:D

CC Infos is the only one I use. Loads of Sostas on there. If you download Google Chrome and paste this link into it the site will translate into English. accueil once your in the site you can check out all the Sostas and you can download all the POI for the whole of Europe for free. If you get stuck let us know.

camperstop Europe has some. There is also an Italian book : Aree di Sosta, I think that I bought this from Vicarious books. They are not just picnic spots, they have service points on them, similar to the French aires and German stellplatz.

Hi my 2007 sostas book is just like the old 1960s AA book and about as easy to follow , there is a new one search ( guida camper aree di sosta) it comes with a google translate listing 7896 stopovers I think you may be best to look for it over there we bought our last one in a supermarket when we were there, vicarious show a 2012 version as out of stock but there is a 2014version available from Areasosta Italia - Scoprire l'Italia in Camper: Aree Sosta, Punti Sosta, Agri-Campeggi, Camper Service, Campeggi e molto altro... if you can handle the translation ,
We're off in a months time gonna take the old one and Camperstop also got a campingcarinfos dongle, but will look for the new book out there,

Sadly I don't speak a word of Italian so the book would be useless. I'm a bit dubious now about anything other than personal experience. I found an aire in Punta Sabatinni I think it is, that had been recommended on a site. However it's a bus park which charges campers €30 per 24 hours. There's a camp site about 1 km away which charges €20 for a pitch with leccie. Some of the campsites are silly money and a lot of the car parks don't allow campers.
Close to the campsite is a wild camping spot and about 1km away is the ferry and boat crossings office, they charge €18 for a 12 hour return pass on the boat. There's a car park nearby that will take campers and charges €6 for a 12 hour period. So, free overnighting, €6 for 12 hours day parking and €18 for 12 hours boat pass, you can do Venice for €24 per day, or €38 if you go on the campsite. That's the cheapest way I've found of doing it so far.
I'm going to check some more aires later. :)

We did find a lot of the large cities had the big car park scenario as an aire Sienna, Pisa etc but they are more like our park & ride schemes so secure guarded overnight parking with hook up all facilities and bus service into town night & day ,
Don't need the lingo for the book aires are marked on the map, co-ords marked and they say gratuito or pargemento , survived several years of France with only the basic knowledge and if it's telling you where 8000 parking spots are sure you will find something!!!

I've found San Giuliano car park. Right at the end of the causeway, €5 per 24 hours. All I need now is to work out how to get over the causeway...

Job done. Buses here don't take cash. You need to get a pre paid ticket from a Hellovenezia stand or from most shops and other outlets. From the first bus stop you come across on Forte Marghera in Mestra (1.5 miles walk from San Giuliano aire) it's €1.30 into Piazzela Roma, and the same back. So if you were to go into Venice each day it's €7.60 per day for one. Nice going eh?
By the way the weather was outstanding today :)

Do you have the GPS for this car park at San Giuliano? I looked at loads of options for Venice but couldnt find anything that close.

Glad its going well.
