I've just bought a new TomTom GO 5000 and I find it won't accept the POI. Has anyone else got one and found a way to install them ?

Are you loading the correct files? It's the ov2 and bmp files you need for a TomTom.

Hi all – new member here, I downloaded the POI zip file from the site (onto my Mac). Unzipped and moved the resulting TomTom folder to the correct location but couldn't see anything via TomTomHome. I then noticed that the files were suffixed .ov2 and .bmp, whilst all other TomTom POI files were .toc and .png. What to do? I tried downloading the files via TomTomHome and, voila, they were .toc and .pngs and they installed without hassle. Why would the files on the site be different to the ones via TomTom? And have I got the right file? (I've yet to spot a wild camp on the map!)

Hi Biglol, your new TomTom is part of the latest range and doesn't accept third party POI, there has been lots of complaints in the TomTom forums about this but so far there hasn't been anything done to fix the problem, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I'm in the same boat with my new TomTom Go 6000.

Seems like tomtom have shot themselves in the foot again with this latest range of models then.

I continue to recommend the older models for their ease of use and poi installation.

As I regularly get asked 'Which model should I go for?' I suggest the GO 520/720/920/530/730/930 and the GOLIVE 540/740/940/550/750/950 ranges as the best from tomtom.

There are others which are perfectly good but I mention these especially because they will work well with the 'Truck' software

Just be careful with models that were produced after these models. Check if you are not sure.

Unfortunately you are correct

Every TomTom navigation device comes with thousands of POIs (Points of Interest) pre-installed and you can easily install more.

Note: This feature is not available on the following devices: GO 400, GO 500, GO 600, GO 5000, GO 6000.

A TomTom POI set consists of a file with the extension .ov2. You can also add an optional .bmp bitmap file that contains icon images for your POI set.
The new Tomtoms look good with the bigger screens etc but you cannot beat the old GO series for being able to update and play around with

When your tomtom is connected to the PC can you go to windows explorer and see the tomtom as a removable drive?

I copied the files over direct and it worked, even though everything was suggesting you had to use the tomtom home software, which had no facility to add unless they were publically published.

And then re-start the tomtom, go to POI's and tick wildcamping etc.

Might help?

Hi St3v3, unfortunately the new TomToms use My Drive not TomTom Home and the adding of third party POIs isn't available on My Drive, lots of TomTom users with the latest range of devices have tried to find a way round this problem but as far as I'm aware they haven't found a way yet, I visit the TomTom forums several times a week to find out what's going on.

Hi Fairytooth, I have to agree with you, TomTom has shot itself in the foot big time with the latest range.
I think I'll have to get my old TomTom Go 910 repaired and use that for the motorhome.

new satnav

I currently have a old tomtom xl with not much room to load any more on it so I'm thinking of getting a new satnav. Can any one recommend any other makes or is tomtom a good option , the caravan club are advertising the Snooper would this have the same problem with the POI,s.

Do not buy a Snooper if you want to load your own POIs - e.g. wild camping. It is not possible ...

I use tomtom go's, same size screen as your XL but has a SD slot so can be converted to the Truck Version, no more being directed down tight roads etc, a lot cheaper than a new snooper and because they are upgradeable it will always be possible to have the latest software, maps, speedcams and POI's.
Tomtoms to avoid are the ones I posted earlier (GO 400, GO 500, GO 600, GO 5000, GO 6000., you cannot install third party POI's on these models) but I would still go for an earlier model with a SD slot
