Levelling devices and chocks

I was at Solfest last weekend and, since I am about to buy a motorhome, I took an interest in the vehicles there. The fields were far from level and a number of motorhomes and vans seemed to be using what looked like big round gym weights piled up under the wheels, apparently accessing them from small yellow ramps. I have identified the ramps on another forum, but can find no reference to the large discs. Are these standard or was it just some people improvising? It seemed like a good idea.

could be big round gym weights.......you can use anything to chock a van - I often use the odd large stone if in a spot and I want to drive off in the middle of the night. Many people ask me why I'm parked up on a stone - I say I have slow puncture and I am keeping the nail in :lol-061:

Not sue what they where but please use care if using wooden planks. When the tyre gets a better grip than the ground, They come out from under the wheel like bullets.

Several years back at a show i saw that happen.

The stupid guy revved up as he was driving onto them and one of them shot out like a Bloody Exorcet Missle.

Thankfully no one was stood in the way but it badly damaged another Motorhome.

you could try these Milenco Aluminium Leveller or just get a set of plastic chocks, a set of gripper tracks is also a very good idea cost under £15, getting towed out when stuck/loss of traction, not covered by most recovery policies up to £300.

Squibby.

Solfest is exceptional, it is the most uneven place I have ever had to camp at and I expect these were regular attendees who had found something to do the job that standard ramps can't cope with on that site.

Hi Wooie,

At that price Milenco Pair Quattro Level Ramps plus bag, caravan, motorhome.: Amazon.co.uk: Garden & Outdoors. When a chunk of scrap wood is free. Is it tight fisted or a fool and his money soon parted. :)

The thing that really puts me off them is the risk of driving over the end and the possible risk of damage to van. We have a smaller set something likehttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Fiamma-75108-Level-System-Pro/dp/B0013T3HB6/ref=sr_1_3?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1377848510&sr=1-3&keywords=fiamma+levelling+ramps but do not often need to use them.

I have a pair of chocks and they have a big lip before the end of the highest section to stop you over shooting the chock and you can feel the lip easaly through the clutch bite and stearing wheel, softly softly catchy monkey is the method, they are easy to use and have done by my self many times as my kids are allergic to rain it seams even though they live in Scotland, but when its dry I kick one of them out to spot the wheels position on the chocks.

Squibby.

I bought a couple of these .. 100cm meter long and 20cm wide

Have a few different sizes of blocks and just drive up them .. They take the weight of MH without any problems .. You can also use them if the grass is a bit boggy and put the front wheels on them so you can just drive off ..

Thanks for the advice. I think the things I saw were a one-off for that particular site. I was camping and I had problems finding some level ground. Still, great festival and I hope to be there with my van next year!

just made a pair of multi level ramps out of scaffold boards, for each ramp cut a 3ft length, then a 2ft length, and a 1ft length, place 3ft one on floor place 2ft one on top keeping the ends level and screw together, then place the 1ft one on top and screw that down as well, job done one multi level ramp, I also have a couple of 4ft lengths spare to place under these if needed whole lot cost less than a tenner using s/h boards

They must weigh a ton t carry round & put in place! I got mine off e-bay for about a tenner & being plastic they are really light. Don't need to use them that often.

Not very heavy at all, scaffold boards are pretty light, not many plastic ramps about that are suitable for a 7.5 tonner.

Got the milenco triples.... Well worth the money, nice tire shaped grooves, grippy when wet, go high, lightweight and pack together nicely... Also yes, have done the wooden block thing.

OP... Have never seen the round things, sounds like improv:)

If you use anything like that here under your wheels it,is classed as camping and you will be moved on:wave:

We used to use home made wooden levelling blocks, which were heavy. We recently purchased the Millenco triple ramps and they are really good, giving you three decent levels. Good and strong. Although expensive, we think they were worth the money. Really depends whether you are talking coachbuilt motorhome or not?
