Driving licence run out

I just tried doing it online, what a farce, I got so wound up I've given up for the day, if you make a mistake, there is no way to get back to before the mistake, I was taking the picture as required of my passport, but it didn't clarify which photo page, and there are two, I thought my phone might be acting up so I restarted it now I can't get back in, I'm fairly decent with IT, but the app is terrible.

I find 90% of all this IT crap does not work well esp for old farts like us, we are not wanted anymore. :(
Yesterday we tried about 3 times to get a pay booth in a dublin carpark to work, i was ready to take a sledge hammer to it.:(
I knew a chap who with tools he had unbolted a barrier once and turfed it to the side and drove out after getting trapped. 😂

I find most things like this are best done on a proper computer with a proper browser, keyboard etc and and proper navigation tools on the browser screen.

Apps on a phone are so limited by comparison and I reserve their use for when I am away from home and don't want to carry a laptop with me.

Ok if you have a chip reader.

I couldn't find my licence last week so I had to get a new one.
I found the process ok - How old is your passport? I don't believe I took a picture of my passport (or the photo in the passport), but one thing I did have to do is put the phone against the passport so it could read the biometric information. Does you passport have this? (I don't know when this was added).

Why would I need a chip reader on my laptop to do something on line? There are established ways to pay for things on a web page with a credit card, that often involve using a phone to receive a verification code for example.

The app is used as "they" think it's easier to get the picture of the passport etc to them, and it would be if their instructions were designed to be useful.

Mine is only 3 years old and has the chip. That is the page I needed to picture; it isn't very specific., No chip reader, just use the phone to use the only QR code

I keep a scanned picture of both sides of my driving licence and my passport on my pc ready to upload when required. There is usually an option to upload a picture rather than take a photograph again.

Why would anyone think moving from a decent resolution computer screen with a proper keayboard, to a small phone screen where the on screen keyboard obscures half the stuff you need to see, and has buttons a quarter the size of my fingers to make typing inaccurate, is a "good idea"

When I reached 70 a couple of years and had to ditch my old paper licence for a photo card one, I used the online application and it picked up my passport photo. I certainly didn't have to actually photograph it and upload it, I may have had to scan the details that Wildebus mentioned, although I don't remember doing that. I got the licence in about 3 working days

All done, you can't keep a good bear down, but I managed it anyway, I just shut the whole lot down and started from scratch, then it wanted a feckin PIN, WHAT FECKIN PIN???? figured that out, pictured the right page this time, then it wanted to scan the biometric doodah, it's so slow, and the screen with the instructions vanished, but I got it eventually, so all done, had to submit my gorgeousness again. It confirmed that it had run out as Liz insisted that I'd done it a few months ago, well, she was right if you call 36 a few, not asked for any sheckles yet.

And if I understand it right, now the renewal is in, you should be allowed to drive, and renew your insurance.

Careful. I don't think thats the case if your licence has expired already.

I would confirm this with either the DVLA or ChatGPT Kev but a quick google tells me you can drive while they process your renewal "ONLY" if the current licence has not expired.

My advice would be to take up drinking and get Liz to drive you to the pub while you await the new licence. :D
