Arghhhhh! Broken the bed again!!

Hmm, seeing that helps so essentially 2 L shapes at different heights very doable then, but you need a bloke who knows how to use a press brake, or maybe welding two lengths together might be more easier.

I assume Tim would have a pukka press brake, I'd have happily had a go with a 6 inch bit to test the fitting but I don't have the gear nowadays, but it is simple engineering.

Tim would no doubt be the man but I don't really want to hassle him with the job as it will be more work than you imagine and he's a long way away. I put out a post on the local fb groups for Richmond and Barnard Castle though and got a fair few replies. These people are quite near to me and they do a lot of work for an old client of mine by the sound of it. They are not actually in Darlington. Just about 8 miles down the road from here.

Will sound them out. Of course at the moment I have two full sets of brand new supports which Swift sent me as the last lot broke so it could be I just got a bad set but I dont think so. They would do this year though if I cant get anything better done straight away.

How are you breaking them anyway? without the obvious guffaw, I assume that it's where when you have the bed set up king size and it is where you get in or out, all the weight is focused in that small area, we saw this as a weak spot on few vans and made sure we put our hand on to take part of our weight, then climbed onto the bed, what we did do on one van was put a bit of slaters lathe vertically under nearer end, jus held in place with some clear silicone adhesive.

I'm a rock star shag god so you figure it out. :D

Oddly the side thats broke most is not the side where most of the weight is. Anyway. I reckon ill sound out some fabricators just to get an idea, maybe let them take a look at it but I might see how it goes this year with the two sets I have. If its not too big a job and they can do it soon ill get it done now. My guess is they will just make the parts and not fit them but it might not be that tricky to do that myself.

Just repair like for like and think there that should be good for another 10 years with a bit of care. Get this bought it is for nothing it looks the same I think.

Thats the point though. They aren't. They were replaced earlier last year after the first ones broke last Christmas. The brand new set didn't last six months. I have a source that can get 4m lengths for £60 and I have two new full sets but it needs a permanent fix. Now it could be that the ones that broke last Christmas were the originals and just got brittle and its possible the replacement set were defective but my gut feeling is they just aren't fit for purpose.

Just an update on this thread folks (Groans can be heard all over the UK And Europe :D )

I just spent the last couple of hours fitting the new bet supports. Its an absolute ball ache of a job as you have to cut bits out, unscrew all sorts of bits and pieces and the biggest issue is getting the slats back into the support runners as they are too long to run parallel before you fit them because the bathroom and lounge units get in the way. Takes forever and a lot of swearing.

Anyway I watched @MERL fit them last time (with my help of course :D ) and he had one of those fancy power drill screwdrivers so I bought one off Temu the other day. It turned up so off I went. I expected it to fall to bits in ten seconds but its pretty good. Couldn't have done the job without it.

So the new supports are in but the question is how best to support them from the back? There isn't much I can do about the slats support for now where the bed slides out, we will have to see how they go but underneath the seat at the back of the support the bench seat just rests on a right angled thin bit of plastic which is the back end of the bed supports and that broke as well at the end of last years trip. As its out of sight could I just glue some timber the full lengthy underneath it? Ideas please.

The bit that needs supporting is marked with the green arrow below. Trouble might be that there is some plastic that comes down from it as well so any wood might not fit flush. What I might be able to do is get some bits to run from the floor to the support but there is a locker draw in the middle also.

Thankyou for those helpful contributions! :D

Another idea I thought of just now while eating chips in Barney was quite a simple one. Just find a similar piece of timber to the drop down bench seat pictured below and screw it perpendicular under the slat marked with the greed arrow to the floor. Like a prop if you like. It would have to be an exact length and its possible it might restrict opening the locker from above but there is a locker anyway. The only other issue is the batteries are under there in a sucken batter box so I would have to check there is space.

Or. I could mount the internal locker supports on flat hinges like these. That way if I ever need to lift the locker from the top they will swing inwards. :D

Mine looks to be the same as yours. Under the seats, I think some 2x1 would work well, on mine it wouldn't foul anything, as the bed slats, you are both aware that for some reason you manage to break them, so just be careful

Just to be of further help Barry, I've devised a plan to prevent future breakages. The plan is so cunning that the very concept is beyond the comprehension of most ordinary mortals.

Stop eating chips in Barney ya fat bastud! 😐
