The Diesel garage rang me just now about MY EGR valve. He's got it off, and it is NOT caked up at all really, (I'll post a pic of it later on, not the problem it seems, I almost always every day drop to third and cane it for a few miles if on a decent road, so that seems to work fine, he thinks it is the solonoid that is at fault which is part of the unit older vans have a vacuum operated valve, so that hopefully with fix it's cold running problem, it works 100% once it reaches normal temperature.

I did consider that, but he advised against it, he did explain but it was a whoosh moment and Liz was waiting for me.

Got the van back home, it's like a new van, sets of well goes up hills better, and just feels better, £400 all in.

I think for a typical motorhome/camper doing a low mileage, the EGR is just a PITA. Blanking them off is simple and probably needs no remapping after doing so.

It will leave a light on your dash if you don't remap it David.

It did put up mass air flow on the code reader, his not mine, mine didn't see any faults at all, that cleared itself after fitting the EGR, he said the Egr interferes with the MAF.

I just use the Torque app and a OBD2 BT plug-in, I could do with a better plug in, maybe, had this one about 10 years, or maybe a better BT app, any suggestions?

my 2013 ducato. had a problem with light coming on the way i drive it doesn’t need caning lol thrashing it is my default , garage said it’s about a grand for the new valve or a sensor was £80 not had s problem since , in fact after graham did my timing belt in june this 12 year old van with 98,000 on the clock has never driven as well in the 10 years i’ve owned it ,

My egr valve on our Renault Master, let us down SO many times, I took the plunge and blanked it off. It ran well for a couple of trips, before the dashboard light came on. So I contacted a company in Norwich, to see if they could help.
They told me to pop over, that same day, and remapped the vehicle, so that it doesn’t even know that it’s ever had an egr valve. Pulling like a bl**dy train now.

My Volvo car coughed and spluttered. I took it to my usual garage, an independent in a village which usually had a queue of customers outside. They phoned me. "It's the EGR valve. £500". I said OK do it. They changed the EGR Valve and I paid the money. I asked for the old EGR valve, took it home and it didn't look at all bad. Next week, the car coughed and spluttered. I took it back to the garage. "Its the EGR valve computer. £450". I said do it. So £950 for a £450 job and no you can't have the money back for the part that was OK in the first place. So I didn't go there again.
Next, an intermittent message appeared on the speedo cluster: Anti skid service required. It was intermittent, and I had changed all the brakes which I knew were fine. I went to the MOT garage to book it in. I asked the guy if this message comes up but it passes all the brake tests would that pass or fail? The MOT tester looked through all the regulations and said if there are no warning lights on, and it passes the brake test it will pass. So I booked it in, took it for the test and the other tester bloke tested it. The message came up and he failed it. I protested and asked why, when the brake test is perfect. He said it MIGHT be a fault. I took it to another garage who plugged his diagnostic computer in and it said ABS pump faulty. He said 'A new one is £1000 or I know a bloke in a shed who reconditions them for £500. What do you want to do?" I said I want to leave you the keys and I'll walk home and post you the V5. He said 'Oh, do you want to sell it?" I thought ' what, for actual money?' Yes. He knew someone and I quickly sold it for £1000 less than its true value. A month later I took my daughter's car there to have a spring changed. I asked about the Volvo. He said Oh it was just a £50 sensor. I know the local chief of everything to do with MOTs, he trains testers, examines testers and inspects their garages. He said they had no right to fail the car, it should have passed.
So now, dear readers, you know why I despise computerisation of vehicles and why I bought a 1983 Mercedes and a 1999 Transit based Autosleeper.
And I have found an honest garage which does the job that is necessary, not the jobs that earn them an extra £500. And it does MOTs. I don't go to the previous garages and I don't go to that incompetent MOT test station.

I have Torque too but it is very basic.
I bought on ebay MultiECUscan for the 3 fiats we've got very useful finds most faults. Though as I've just bought a new motorhome it wouldn't read that one, needs some bidirectional confangled reader now.

Egr,Dpf,Adblue,Eloy,I've had my fill of them. This year l will be buying a pre 93 Merc motorhome (26) something l know l can fix.People are spending thousands on Euro 6 nonsense now and still have more problems. But alot are quite happy as they are saving the planet.mmmm.

Considering that too. Still happy with my euro 6, but you never know what's round the corner.

Some of those old timers go for good money too.

Yes the older mercs hold their values to the point of what would appear to be overpriced. But practicality wins the day for me.lm drawing the line at an OBD port 😄 seriously. These Euro 6 can have over 15 sensors and door modules cabin modules and more all communicating with each other,in the end it becomes the sensors are the problem, you can't make it up but people willingly accept it and cough up silly money for repairs. Its and old A class for me.

Overpriced is just 'too much money when you could have done better'. If you ignore the driveway bling of a new vehicle and just consider 'I paid £x,xxx for this, it has cost me £300 in servicing for the last four years' against 'I paid £xx,xxx for this, isn't it pretty and I hope it doesn't go wrong because if it does it will cost £x,xxx to fix it for a short period, then the £x,xxx price for the old banger looks like excellent value. You can get a whole 1983 Mercedes car for the same cost as fixing a fault on a 2015 car. And assuming a car or camper is over 40 yrs old, you can drive it in London and other snobby cities. Their politicians think that the pollution caused in manufacturing a new vehicle does not exist and in any case it is their problem, not ours so that is OK.
Personally I draw the line at a camper needing AdBlu. There's not only the mechanical complexity and the crystallisation of it bunging up the works, there are the additional computers required to make it work. Have you noticed the incredible inbalance of the cost of AdBlu? In Europe it is typically 50c a litre. Here it can be £4 a litre in supermarkets, let alone petrol stations or franchised main dealerships.

I just see repairs bills as the cost of running a complicated, expensive vehicle. We've managed to do it so far, and we are surviving on our gov pensions, no savings to speak of. I don't like the bills, but we don't complain about them; we pay them and move on, hoping we don't get too many more.
