Fuel duty rises: budget small print

Post budget it's been well covered that from next September the temporary 5p cut in fuel duty, granted after Covid will begin to be unwound in three stages over 6 months

But buried in the budget small print (which I've seen no comment about anywhere) is the government's intention from April 2027 to once more begin to increase fuel duty annually in line with inflation for the first time in well over a decade.

Fuel might never cost less than it does now.

If we do have a different government the chances are they'll continue with the increase, but blame the current government.

Fact is we are only 4 years away from only being able to buy new electric cars, but i find with no upgraded h duty cable structure sorted all over the country it will be put back at least another 5 years, and i cannot see that helping, so this is why they want more duty to intice you to go down the electric path which as i said wont happen anytime soon.

Body swerving the politics, fuel duty has to rise same as it always has, but now there’s other pressures on fossil fuels.

Supply, is getting more expensive as the countries that hold the resources are demanding higher prices.
The cost of running the country is going up not down.
Global warming is happening and whether or not EVs are the long term answer it’s what we have available now and any government will need to encourage the change. The infrastructure needs to improve and fossil fuels tax’s will be used to help pay for it, regardless of what any political party claim.

Could be worse, could have returned to the escalator of the 90's which was a few % above inflation.

Big problem with EVs is the devastation of seabeds and kids digging for chems which is way wrong, when the salt alloy batteries hit the market then things will change big time, clean reusable 3 mins to 80% charge and 6 mins to full charge and a 900 mile range plus 30 year life span we are then on a winner.

They've been developing these for 40 years Kev so who knows?

I was discussing these with Phil a few months back and I don't think they will be viable for a while yet.

6 minute charging and 900 mile range is certainly a long way off.

As far as MH's go it's plausible they'll be something with a reasonable range say 650 miles by 2035.
Might be in a 5 tonne though.

UK Government is to license more oil & gas exploration exploration/extraction, including fields that have been worked previously but where the then technology could recover no more oil/gas, or, where the then prices made extraction unprofitable. And the Government maintains that this does not breach its zero emissions commitment, just like the freeze on personal tax thresholds doesn't breach the 'no increase in income tax' manifestp. Weasel words from a bunch of stoats; or do I mean scrotes?
