Just wondering who might have come across any good options for Eu breakdown cover. I’ve been using RAC up until now but my renewal has come in and I think they are ramping it up a bit too much. The van is over 3.5t so that I accept poses extra costs. I insure through NFU and whilst their insurance rates are good (without opening that can of worms) they don’t offer any breakdown cover. I’m not sure if I should look to change insuranceprovider next year to someone that can combine both or just suck it up? Anyone’s experiences or suggestions gratefully received.

I forgot you can get a discount if you've ever worked for the government in any capacity for any amount of time, I worked for Royal Mail for a week, it counted but they didn't check.

Every year when I get my RAC arrival renewal notice, due in the next week or so, I phone and haggle.
Not had to pay the full asking price since I started haggling many years ago.
Having said that the package they offer is not available with other companies (that I can find).
RAC is consistently one of the top successes for haggling according to Martin Lewis.

I just signed onto Britannia rescue for a quote.

Not asked any questions about us or vehicle, annual UK & EU = £152
Many thanks to you and Pudsey Bear for this pointer. Hadn’t seen them come and yes it looks pretty good indeed. I’ve just been on and as you say it comes back at 152 with all the extras. Weird no questions about the vehicle though.

Well they started off wanting 300 more than the price I didn’t end up paying last year. Whilst offering the same deal on their sale for less than the haggle down price. Just a bit of sharp practice IMO.

My ins and full breakdown is with AIB.
Appreciate this. I’m up for renewal in April so I will see what it comes to overall. At some stage I will down plate the van back to 3.5 and I’ll probably get more choice. Sad it costs me extra on RFL to lose the PHG tag though!

We used to use Saga, but they stopped offering breakdown without having the insurance off them.
Just swapped to Caravan club. ,breakdown plus travel insurance. Good if you have existing medical conditions, not too many questions to answer

Update.

My renewal came in, the current price is £371 next year £534

Bear in mind this is for home start, recovery U.K. & ireland (living in N.I we get all island service) onward travel, and full European cover via C&CC Arrival, so no weight, age, or dimension restrictions.
More importantly this cover is for 4 family members in any vehicle (even as a passenger) anywhere in Europe.

We have been members for many years, so premium service given.

After speaking to a really helpful Mancunian he offered me a renewal of £332 which I have accepted. Divided by 4 it comes in at around £80 per head for each family member. Not that anyone will reimburse me!

So as expected a 10 minute call saves lots of money and beats the AA and Britannia. Wether they cover over 3.5 tons I don’t know, but the cover and service suit me. As with most things individual needs will inform outcomes.

A Nationwide BS Flexaccount Plus costs £18 a month (£216 a year). For that you get roadside and home assistance for any vehicle you're in, including motorhomes, AA in the UK, DAS in Europe I believe. Definitely works in Europe I've found. Repatriation from Europe if necessary. As well as this, you get mobile phone insurance and 31 days travel insurance by Aviva (even for over 80s) thrown in. Check it out!

Could you not have 'phoned AIB on your mobile and got a new breakdown number Trev?

I use Britannia as well, with their personal cover, it covers you (and spouse) for ANY vehicle you are in, even if it doesnt belong to you (hence no questions about your vehicle). It also covers classic cars (I have one 70 years old, and one 90 years old). Excellent deal, they used to be part of LV, but think they are now independant.

Well thanks to all it’s been a really interesting chat. In the end I’ve gone with Britannia. I’m happy with the sub £200 cost for all options and personal cover. As with all these things it’ll come down to what happens when you call the number for help to judge value over cost. Hoping I never need to find out it’s the latter! Thanks all

We've been with them for about 12 years and used them 5 times in the UK no bother, just make sure if you change vehicles to inform them of the new reg etc, it makes no difference to the cover, but they spent an hour once looking for the wrong vehicle despite me telling them when I rang, sometimes the info doesn't get passed, happened with RAC once too.
