Government ban sandwiches re-entering

Along with all other produce the government have banned meat imports from EU to prevent the risk to UK livestock.
 
I hope this is lifted by September as I planned on bringing and entire French Cheese shop home in the van. Mrs D might have other ideas though. :(
 
Has anyone found it is causing delays....we plan to eat all the dairy etc before we go through the tunnel. Don't carry meat products anyway. Just have to buy a few bits when we arrive in UK. As long as I can have a cuppa ( and got milk powder)
Yes, I usually bring a hefty amount of french cheese back with us, so that's some Dosh saved :(

Bit of a trek! I noticed the other day in Lewis and Coopers in Northallerton they were low and cheese and particularly French cheese so presumably this will effect everywhere?

Not sure if there is a problem with French cheeses ?

We crossed Dieppe Newhaven on Tuesday 15th April, arrived Newhaven 0930. Took an hour to clear passport and customs. First we knew of ban was at passport control where friendly policeman held us until space available in customs shed. Fortunately we only had bits and pieces in the fridge, we had thought of bringing some Normandy cheeses but didn't get round to it. Fridges checked in every van I think, didn't experience, or see, more thorough checks. Some cars also checked as per normal. An hour to clear the port was my at experience at Portsmouth in April last year but this boat was smaller and less than half full so you might need to expect longer delays unless they get more staff deployed.

Good. Not being able to (temporarily) bring cattle, sheep, goat, and pig meat, as well as dairy products, from EU countries into Great Britain for personal use, to protect the health of British livestock, the security of farmers, and the UK’s food security, is a small price to pay.

FMD could decimate the farming industry, so extending this ban to cover all EU countries is a good thing.
 
How is FMD spread:
  • illegal imports of contaminated food products, for example: meat and dairy products
  • import of infected animals
  • contaminated materials, for example: vehicle, equipment, clothing, footwear
  • airborne: The virus can be spread up to 60 km overland and 300 km over water
That latter is a shocker and something I never knew about FMD! 😲

Not a good situation all round 🥺

I suppose its going to be rare to see a Cow eating a chunk of Morbier or a French Ham sandwich but I think the argument would be that if someone brings in goods that are contaminated they might discard the packaging and a wandering wild animal might sniffle at it or chomp it and then spread it to a herd of cows. Seems unlikely to me but there you go. What I didnt know is the revelation above that it can be airborne for 300km which means if it reaches anywhere in Northern France or Holland its almost certain to reach the UK. I hope not, it was devastating last time.
