Same vans here, most folk flash you a warning, i got caught once and no speed sign to be seen on antrim coast road as hidden in a hedge.
A year or so back the bandits burned one out in carrickfergus after turfing the driver out and taking his mobile, most here are only used in civalised places, never see them in bandit areas, strange that.

Somerset have got tripod mounted cameras, which get carted round on motorbikes. Only need Avery small space to park in. And can be quite difficult to spot

In many instances though they are designed to catch out the unwary and inappropriate limits are set. I think it would be naive to think that the limits weren't designed to generate cash where it is not really necessary to do so.

I was a passenger recently on a road where the speed limit changed many times for no apparent reason and yes, there were mobile speed wagons just waiting for somebody to miss a change whilst they were perhaps concentrating on other aspects of driving. You only have to miss one sign and you're nicked and the operators know exactly where to sit.

It's the drivers responsibility to adhere to the limits and to observe where the limits apply .

Whether the limits are sensible or not is a whole other discussion ...

Yes I agree. Surely though the authorities should make it easier for the driver to stick to the limits rather than easier to generate cash. Lets face it, the technology is there to force people to stick to the limits but they would never use it. Not that I would like to see such enforcement but it shows that in reality cash is more important than safety.

I suspect the world of vehicles reporting over speed events etc isn't that far away ...

To be honest I STILL feel it's completely down to the driver ...

Lack of attention whilst driving is probably responsible for the bulk of speeding offences ...
Folks drive along in a dream world ...I see it day in day out on my daily drive between Manchester and Birmingham .

Frankly I'd like to see speed/lane/phone enforcement cameras over ever lane ...

It would hopefully improve people's focus and driving standards .

I didn't actually mean vehicles reporting, I meant sensors in cars physically restricting a car to stay within the speed limit then there would be no need to fine anybody for speeding.

But priorities regarding safe driving are just plain wrong sometimes. My granddaughters car was hit in a service station a while back (I posted about it at the time). The driver was clearly under the influence of drink/drugs and got very aggressive, she had to be rescued by a passer by. She 'phoned the police at the time but they said it didn't warrant sending anybody out - so that driver was not prevented from driving off and possibly killing somebody which is disgraceful.

As an aside, she has heard from her insurance company today and they are refusing to pay out the £12000 repair bill as they don't believe that the damage could have all been caused by such an accident even though it definitely was. However, for reasons I cannot disclose (yet) this is going to cost the insurance company very dearly!

Ford USA invented a system like that. The vehicle could contact local PD automatically with all the details. It was never put into any vehicles for sale to the public. I am just amazed that they spent so much time and money before they realised that very few (if any) customers would want it fitted in their vehicles.

I don’t have an issue with speed camera vans, I got 3 points a while back and it was my own bloody fault tbh.

But what I do object to is the antics our local force go to to effectively use such vans to increase their coffers, as an example a dual carriageway nearby has a 70mph speed limit, at a point this changes to 50mph on a bend, just past the bend is a lay-by and 50% of the time there’s a camera van sat there.

Ok for me as I know the road, but for none locals it’s little more than a deliberate trap to make money.

My EV does exactly that Rob, you have to turn it on each journey but once on it checks its mapping and reads road signs and will not allow you over the speed limit, in cruise control when you go from a 50-70mph limit it speeds up automatically when you come up to a slower car it slows down and will not allow you too close.

There's a whole heap of modern vehicles that are capable of constantly transmitting data to the manufacturer etc ...
Including automatically alerting emergency services in the event of a crash/breakdown etc ....

Sat nav systems built in etc etc ....

The tech is already out there just a few key clicks to activate ;-)

I blooming well hope that never happens in my lifetime. Can you imagine the situation? You pull out on the bike to overtake someone doing 55 in a 60 and they decide to do that thing some like to do where they put their foot down which is no problem on a powerful bike as you blip the throttle and your past in an instant unless the computer says no and cuts you off. Sometimes its safer to quickly break the speed limit on an overtake as you get past quicker. Certainly the case on a bike as its very easy to increase by say 20 mph and equally as easy to wind that speed off.
