I’ll not be able to go to Spain and Portugal this February. Hospital stuff.

As I wrote on the other site, I’m thinking of Cornwall instead, in February. If you’re aware of do’s, don’ts, or advice you’d be willing to share. I’ll be a happy bunny.

Dunno, but let's have a beer in the bristol area on your way there 👍

Hi ya,
I’m of Cornish Celt stock (Mevagissey)
As far as Wild stop overs go it’s the same DOs & Don’ts as pretty much anywhere else, But with maybe more of an accent & copious amounts of Cider.
Not as much spoiled for choice but still plenty if you look at the POI map.
Don’t underestimate The Boarder areas, both Coastal AND Inland.
Bude,Ilfracombe,Porlock,Breen Sands,

Enjoy

We did Devon and Cornwall in January once. Loved it but it was one of those really bad winters, 2010 I think. We spent one night on Slapton sands car park in six inches of snow. I found there was more going on in Cornwall than Devon. Many of the touristy villages in Devon were dead. Maybe there are more second homes there perhaps. Enjoyed it though. Didnt do much wilding, mainly CLs.

The important hospital visit in January, has now been put off until February.
Earlier this month (December) I’d had my chest shaved, the consent form was signed, and the surgeon decided not to operate. Being honest, I’ve no idea when the new pacemaker will be installed. Hopefully before I keel over 🤞

If you are around Wadebridge call in at the masters arms. You can stay overnight with good food & beer

Obviously the thread title is a typo!
Many of us live in the true ‘West Country’ we are on the Welsh border near Chirk loads of places to stop around here!

We visited the South West of England last year mostly North Devon and found zero problems finding parkups

I particularly enjoyed our time up on Exmoor, in Watchet and a little village called Lee we stopped at the rather officiously run Minnows campsite whilst visiting a poorly relative in Sampford Peverell, saw several kingfishers along the canal which was a real bonus

Hated the vile Damon Hurst statue in illfracombe!

Ventured into Cornwall a few times main problem we have encountered in a large vehicle previously are the very narrow lanes and potentially damaging high hedges especially if exploring off the main drag.

I should imagine it’s a lot quieter and a cracking place to explore at this time of year though!

Never realised that I had made a typo in the thread title. As an ex Norff Londoner, maybe I could be excused for that error.
I’d always considered anywhere west of Hammersmith as the west county.
Now as a relative country yokel, living in the outskirts of Northampton, and having a campervan, I’m a tad more adventurous and a mite more knowledgeable, anywhere west of Hereford now has that claim to fame.
In order to clarify my statement. I’m referring to Devon, Cornwall. So yes, the south West Country 🙄

You can refer to any part of the country using any name you like 😉
It’s obviously all relative anyway, no doubt everyone truly up North sees everywhere below say Carlisle or Newcastle as South!

I have often wondered how the misnomer of refering to the extreme South West of England as the West Country actually came about, it has been like it for decades if not Centuries. It logically also sort of implies everything on the west side of the country above around Bristol is in the North West!

We don’t hear the same for the East, South and North East of England they seem fairly well differentiated but the West side is just a muddle

If I go two miles from my front door I leave the West of one Country and enter the East of another…..
No passports required yet though.

Even under .gov we can be either 'home counties', 'east midlands', 'east of england', or the 'south east'.
FYI, Wales does not extend as west as England, and is not even close to being as far west as Scotland, as for where Trev lives...

Yes that’s a good one, it’s the majority of Northern Ireland rather than North East Ireland though

I guess “North Ireland minus a wee bit of North West Ireland” would be a bit too much for most to write on an envelope
I am sure he will be along to explain shortly😀

Don't be silly, once a Norff Londoner, always a Norff Londoner, and they don't do errors. 😝 🤣

well, as a Londoner, you will also know "The North" is anywhere upwards of the Watford Gap :)
As a temporary Devonian, I always regarded Cornwall, Devonshire, some of Somerset and a bit of Dorset as "the West Country", and not the "South West Country". DLVA would kind of agree with vehicles registered in Cornwall, Devon and Avon being given a "Wx" reg - the "W" bit being for "West Country".
I don't know of anyone (except one now) calling that area the South West Country  . It is the South West, but definately not the South West Country :)

And when working in Kirkcaldy, two of the 'lads', one from Birmingham t'other from Manchester, where arguing over who was a 'Northerner', when one of the Jim's said "Your both southern sassenach's".
