Petrol or Gas Heater

Good morning!

As we head into the colder weather I think this winter I may install a heater! The issue is my old van is petrol and I don't really want to have a separate tank installed just for diesel. But with an underslung gas tank which is pretty big I think my options are petrol or gas?

What experiences have people had of these and any preference? Options seem to be a little limited when compared to diesel.

I too have an underslung gas tank and it seemed the best way to go and it works very well. You would get a Chinese diesel heater at a fraction of the price though and they are very efficient apparently. You would only need a small tank in the boot somewhere and they are usually supplied with the heater.

Actually I've just realised that I don't have one of these - that was on my boat! :LOL: Still worked well though.

The one in my van is a Truma which is similar.

We had an Ebersacher diesel heater in our old T4, it was brilliant loads of heat and ran on a eggcup full of diesel so you don’t need a big tank less than 5 litres would be more ample

A bit less subjective estimate of fuel consumption for D2

Depending on heat output the fuel consumption is between 0.1 and 0.3 litre per hour.

So a 5 litre tank will last between 15 and 45 hours.

Also worth noting that on max heating it will draw 3 amp. so 15 hours will use 45 ah.

You can also get cheap Chinese version, more than the diesel ones and not as much choice but they are about.

The propex must be reliable because many years ago i sold dozens of these and never ever had one back or any complaint. But it does'nt heat water of course.

Propex also offer water heaters too. We had one in a camper, very good but it did require a huge flue hole in the side of the van, and now and then it would go out in a severe gale.

Yeah good discount but when they are over 2K to start with!!!

I think petrol is out of the question.

I think unless I want to go in for a separate diesel tank then this is the way to go. Thanks
 
1 litre of LPG holds less energy than 1 litre of diesel. LPG is still cheaper per KWH but it is not a straight price per litre comparison. 1 litre of propane contains about 7KWH of energy whereas diesel is about 10KWH. LPG at 80p/l costs 11.4 p/KWH and diesel at £1.60 costs 16p/KWH. Bear in mind that home electricity costs are capped at 27p/KWH which makes both LPG and diesel look cheap but compared to natural gas at 7p both look a bit more expensive.

I have opted for a diesel Truma 6E rather than an LPG one on my new van. My oldest Alugas refillable cylinder has only a couple of years left before it has to be replaced at 10 years which made me think about the alternative.

Have a look at the Propex blown air gas heater. I sold lots of them back in the 90's and never ever had any complaint or returns.
