Nice little Wingham mini motorhome

Sorry Trev but you most definitely can. Providing it is secured and not unsafe there is no reason why you can't.
Sorry rob, look up the law, there was a case a few years back, mind you no one here looks so lets be having you over soon, thats if you can down at least 18 pints and still walk the line.
You must reregister the van as a living van to do so, otherwise you have no insurance and can be had for it.

There were a couple of threads about that Trev. Here https://motorhomebuilder.com/threads/do-you-carry-a-scooter-or-motorbike-in-your-garage.66490/page-4

And here https://motorhomer.com/threads/moto...-is-a-living-van-not-motorcarvan.37957/page-3

The conclusion seems to have been that its rubbish. If your carrying a scooter for use while your using the van while on holiday then I think its acceptable.

I think your average plod ain’t going to know your not allowed and the insurance company won’t know unless you tell them or try to make a claim relating to the scoot being there.
From what I read it was the new co that took over doing work that vosa did, they are looking for silly regs to catch us out on, this was one of them, but as usual its the net and taken with a pinch of salt.

I checked with the DVSA and it is perfectly legal providing that it is safe and not compromising any weight distribution issues.

This is the response I got from my email to the DVSA;

Good Afternoon responding to your email received to the Technical Officers on the 28.10.2022

Unless the manufacturer has stipulated I cannot see any reason why a small bike could not be carried in the correct manner on the vehicle.
This being in accordance with Regulation 100 of the Construction and Use Regulations.

100.— Maintenance and use of vehicle so as not to be a danger, etc
(1) A motor vehicle, every trailer drawn thereby and all parts and accessories of such vehicle and
trailer shall at all times be in such condition, and the number of passengers carried by such vehicle
or trailer, the manner in which any passengers are carried in or on such vehicle or trailer, and the
weight, distribution, packing and adjustment of the load of such vehicle or trailer shall at all times
be such, that no danger is caused or is likely to be caused to any person in or on the vehicle or
trailer or on a road.

Provided that the provisions of this regulation with regard to the number of passengers
carried shall not apply to a vehicle to which the Public Service Vehicles (Carrying Capacity)
Regulations 1984 apply.

(2) The load carried by a motor vehicle or trailer shall at all times be so secured, if necessary by
physical restraint other than its own weight, and be in such a position, that neither danger nor
nuisance is likely to be caused to any person or property by reason of the load or any part thereof
falling or being blown from the vehicle or by reason of any other movement of the load or any part
thereof in relation to the vehicle.

(3) No motor vehicle or trailer shall be used for any purpose for which it is so unsuitable as to cause
or be likely to cause danger or nuisance to any person in or on the vehicle or trailer or on a road.

From memory its not the actual carrying bit that was an issue BUT the situations such as a vehicle being motd as class 4 when class 4 wouldn't apply due to weight etc and then falling into the area of "carrying goods" thus losing class 4 status ...
Same with 7.5T vehicles taxed as private hgv ...

As usual there was a heap of grey involved .

I don't have a garage but my next van will have. I don't think I would leave a bike in the back when it's being MOT'd though and providing it's within the weight limit I don't see a problem.

Surely the DVSA technical officers would have mentioned any class 4 issues?

When I replace my van, I will carry a copy of the email with me and if I get stopped at a DVSA check point, or by the police for that matter I will show them how I was advised by their own TO's. I don't think they would have a leg to stand on.

Which in a round about way comes to a livingvan.......
I had a 38 ton artic unit taxed as private hgv....it could only pull unladen trailers....very cheap at the time... but not a class 4 mot.

All this talk about the garage and bikes got me thinking about a few years back
I have a 9 month continuous one trip insurance policy per 12 months, not fulltime as I have a postcode address..(its a lot cheaper). I have to come back to the uk before end of 9 months. Our last motorhome had a garage and we got told the policy would not cover the scooter when carried in the garage(I never asked about a rack) and it would need it's own cover... we could only find one company that would cover it full comp or any cover in europe .(Express ins) all other companies said cover ceased after 30 days.

Looked at a Hymer Exsis some years back. No use - I couldn't pull the bed down, even swinging on it with all my weight - and there wasn't anywhere "downstairs" to sleep.

Could not agree more ,at a certain age toilet runs are a priority,
I too agree and would ask how does one make the bed? We tend to have a mattress protectord, then a bottom sheet then the pillows and quilt. I can't see a way to fit the protector and bottom sheet........
