3D number plates

Think they always have been, only plates made here by recommended parts shops will make you British standard approved plates and only on proof of ownership and a valid driving licence.

Another rule that doesn't make sense to me, they are easy to read, very clear unlike some of the fonts allowed

It is the same here regarding buying plates but 3D plates are legal in the UK at the moment Trev, but you can get 'show plates' from the internet without proof of anything, they are not legal but indistinguishable from the real thing

Show plates are purely for novelty and decoration. You can’t use them legally on the road instead of a number plate, which is registered with the DVLA and used to identify a vehicle in the event of an accident or crime.

Since show plates serve no legal purpose, they aren’t subject to any regulations. You can make choices with regard to colour, design, and background that you can’t with number plates. Many people relish this chance to exercise their creative muscle — they enjoy making things that look good without any sort of restrictions.

I don't know about future legislation in the pipeline. However, 3D (i.e. 'raised') number plates are currently legal provided they use the required font:

See: https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-number-plates

From the reference:

Rules for number plates

The number plates on your vehicle must:
  • be made from a reflective material
  • display black characters on a white background (front plate)
  • display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern
  • be marked to show who supplied the number plate
  • be marked with a British Standard number - this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021
The characters must not be removable or reflective. If your number plates were fitted after 1 September 2021, they must also be a single shade of black.
Your number plates can also:

There are some blatently obvious plates that have been messed around with and the police do bugger all about them.

One that immediately springs to mind is a very pretty young lady in her R.R. whos number plate *** 55 has been made up so as it looks like ***SS.

The 2 numbers have been rounds off so they look like SS instead of 55 and they`ve been closed up to make the word.

She regularly parks in a local supermarket car park that all the police use to get their goodies from when going to and from the headquarters.

Seriously......

IF your usage of the word 'pigs' is in reference to the police as it appears to....

You really have plumbed an all time low of posts on here IMHO.

IF I've misread your post and it's intended meaning then I of course apologise.
Thats there nick name over here, in England there called plods, anyway it was a light hearted joke in response to a thread, lighten up its monday.

Did think Trev had went a tiny bit too far myself but put it down to been an Irish thing.
I’m not offended personally but I do think others might. But OMO

AFAIK the 3D letter ban is for plates made after 1/9/21, also it is for optical 3D, and physical cut 3D are still legal, a quick google will bring up the .gov page with details.

Yet another bullying from gov't, the number plate legislation is a farce, as if they have nothing better to do.
Whole world of vehicle registration is a joke.
Put a bloody Radio Chip on each vehicle and get rid of number plates, save a shed load of plastic.
Reminds me to get my plate back on the road. Yep STANSK.

Not sure it's a farce or anything to do with having nothing better to do...

There are simple to follow rules that are designed to make plates easily readable and easy to read especially at a glance OR by ANPR equipment....

It's not difficult to comply with and frankly the authorities have better things to do than deal with some folks vanity at trying to make a number plate look like their name
Or none reflective
Or tinted so dark it's nigh on unreadable
Or changing letters into numbers
Or adding bits on to make letters....

IMHO buying a private plate smacks of having more money than sense.

I`ve bought some UK / Union Flag stickers which i`m about to put on the plates so i can try them before / if we get away to Johnny Foreigner land.

If i`m not happy with them i`ll get new UK plates made up and a separate UK sticker as well because we will be going into Spain which requires it.

£250 for a personalised plate isn’t a lot of money. It transforms the look of a vehicle.
