Fuel economy has dropped from over 20mpg down to 14mpg

You seem to have been getting poor mpg for a long time, I would have it checked by someone who knows his way around diesels ..... unless you have a heavy right foot. :(

I had the same van as you for 5 years. I got around 22 mpg which could stretch to 24 if a lot of the journey was motorways. The 2.8 jtd is a dependable lump and if you keep between the 2,000 - 3,000 rpm range for best economy you should get what I got.

What top end speed are you doing on motorways and dual carriageways? You need to tootle along at around the same speed as HGVs. If you push it well over 60 mph your economy will drop right off.

With the amount of mpg drop off you have I think your motorhome would have caught fire if it had been a brake disc stuck on but it is worth checking them anyway as the design of the linkage is poor. It is often difficult to set up the handbrake properly as I think it was modelled on a 2nd Century Roman baggage cart.

I also go along with the Mouse theory.
I do usually get about 22 on a decent run, which is why I immediately noticed the difference. I don't think I have a heavy foot but I usually cruise about 70 on the motorway and 50-60 on dual carriageways.

One of the last jobs done before we went away was getting the handbrake adjusted; maybe I should get that checked again?

And I'm definitely getting the air filter checked

Feel the front wheels after about 10 miles, if hot then a caliper may have a stuck piston, 60 to 70, no wonder its eating fuel, try wearing slippers. 😂

I was out over the weekend and I averaged 19mpg, I also have a Burstner 747. The journey also included a lot of hills for 70 miles or so.

Up in the North of Scotland I used to dream about getting 19 mpg.

Economy drops off a cliff when you cannot get above 3rd gear for miles. :(

And remember that Drag increases exponentially as the speed increases (the square of the velocity).

How do you measure your fuel consumption? Are you checking tank full to tank full, easy to get it wrong that way.

I fill right up to the top before and after a journey to get the correct amount of fuel used in litres, then convert that figure to imperial gallons and I then use that figure to divide the total miles travelled, resulting in what I hope is a reasonably accurate mpg calculation.

A full tank of fuel is heavy and uses more fuel, what about to much junk in the van, like excess beer.

Brakes are partially seized. Highly likely after a long layup.
I will go along with this, plus 70 mph in a 5 ton brick wont help.
My front brakes did stick after being stood for 12 months (covid)
The 3ltr engine did not notice this but the rolling road at the mot bay did..
Pads not returning when brakes were released. Stripped and cleaned both front brake calipers. Then new pads fixed it...
No check on fuel consumption though as I just topped the diesel with 5 gallon cans due to not moving ....
We live in it, or did but now changed it for a newer model.

A few years back we had a duff tank of deisel, (this was the assumption after all else had been dismissed) consumption went from around 30mpg to 8mpg! Whilst it rapidly increased in mpg on the first few refills it took a couple of thousand miles before it finally got back to being totally normal.

Knew a truck driver who took the cab home at night, using to much fuel until one night he got up to use the loo in his home only to look out and see his next door nicking fuel with a syphon tube.

Hi ya,
Sorry Egr valve, Turbo gate make sure free.
Add Two doses of Injector cleaner, a Full Tank of GOOD Fuel not Supermrket Fuel (I put Vtech Diesel in), Then a good Thrash on the Motorway at high revs for say 100 miles.
Then add Turbo Cleaner & top up tank Tank of Vetec or whatever suites & another Thrash for 100 mile or so.
Total cost around £120 ish including fuel it’s a good starting point & helped me if you read the thread on the Members only board
It’s maybe worth a Try 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Any recommendations for an injector cleaner? I’ve just googled it and there seem to be a few to choose from
Many manufacturers are now instructing their dealers to not offer fuel injector cleaning or even containers of cleaner to add to the gas tank. ... Some of these chemicals can even damage fuel injectors and emissions components. The way forward is to have a professional clean done by an injection specialist.
