Lidl have got the oil change pumps £9.99

Do you remember the oil change pumps they used to have at petrol station. It was a good idea but I expect the cost of getting rid of the old oil became prohibitive.

No I don't remember that but the old oil here gets used on the sheds and the fences with creosote.

I'm a firm believer that the only way to get out the gunk at the bottom of the sump is to drain the oil in the conventional way via the sump drain plug. Having said that, I did buy one similar to this from Fleabay earlier this year, as I was stupid enough to overfill the van after an oil change. It was very useful for removing the required quantity.

In the old days of 20w50 sludgemaster mineral oil used to build up like tar in the engine, now with fully synthetic 5w40 it is more like water even when cold.

I have always taken out the sump plug before (for the last 45 years) but I thought I would give it a try with a pump. :)

Before we bought a suction drainer at work our boss had one to try. After using it on several different vehicles he had us remove the sump plug from each no oil came out of any.

I have often thought about these when I see them but maybe not such a great advantage? Sump plug way feels more thorough and easy enough but can see the some time saving, but for how often it is needed, nah! Just drive moho up onto levelling ramps then lots of room, simples!

I have used ramps but I am not sure that I am getting all the oil out, maybe it needs to be level because in seconds the new oil is black.

I use 2 X Milenco Quattro leveling ramps to lift the front end making access very easy to the sump plug and oil filter.

Each year i also use Forte Advanced Formula Motor Flush as per the instructions on the bottle.

I also lift the rear to get the motorhome level which assists all or virtually all of the oil gets out using 2 X Clarke 3 tonne Professional trolley jacks and axle stands.

Whilst the engine is still hot i warm up and pour through the balance ( approx 1.25 litre ) of the 2 X 4 litre Castrol GTX 10w40 i buy when doing the oil change.

The new oil and filter then stays remarkably clean for a couple of thousand miles before darkening.

I have used this regime on the motorhme every year from new, it is now approaching 90,000 miles and running sweeter than it`s ever done.

Remember to fill the oil filter before fitting, this will get oil to the bearings without the time laps for oil light to go out.
