Yikes - France Diesel Prices

We've always enjoyed driving in France although it's not much fun in winter, So this year used the ferry to Santander and don't think it was any dearer than driving and now with the fuel increase its leaning more towards the ferry with the winter prices

Or fly to Spain and rent accommodation and transport, don't think there is much in it now if you shop around and don't intend to travel around

I just got some this morning for 1.31 but most super markets seem to be 1.35 and other garages are around 1.55

Heading for Spain - via France

It is interesting to read the comments regarding diesel costs as we are thinking of taking a couple of weeks in September driving to northern Spain. Our Hymer does around 28-30 mpg, so is it cheaper taking the ferry to Santander? or are we better off enjoying the drive down?
Any hints, tips and suggestions are most welcome.

You should just get a quote and then you will see how much more expensive the ferry is. If you re short of time and can afford it then ok, otherwise enjoy the trip. In the big picture how much more are you going to spend on fuel, not a lot.

Your reasoning is flawed I think.

If your road speed is reduced by some 10% then your fuel consumption will improve considerably. This may be offset to some extent by using a lower gear but if the engine is still running at a good point on the torque curve there should be little detriment ...

Would have to agree with you there.
My Mondeo has an MPG average read out and I get better MPG at 50 in 5th than 60 in 6th.
You can hear at 50 that all fuel is com-busted whereas at 60 you have to ease off to obtain the same sound and lose speed.

Passed a garage on the main road through Avignon, 1.45€ a ltr. that’s 10 cents more than I have seem to date. Sign of things to come?

Filled up in Spain with diesel ten days ago at €1.09 (Thursday special offer),cheapest we saw in France was €1.15 but average about €1.35, cheapest we’ve seen in Italy the last couple of days was €1.35 but average is €1.45 and don’t even think about buying fuel on the motorways. But hey ho, it is was it is eh? Cheaper in Morrisons Keighley but the weather and meatballs aren’t so great.

Filled up at a garage coming out of Stranraer on Sunday and petrol was £1.14 a ltr and diesel was £1.18 a ltr. Wasn't a supermarket either but was a nice surprise

It's a cunning plan to squeeze more cash out of British motorhomers.
When the new speed limits come in July, unless I use dual carriageways, our van will not spend much time in 6th gear.
So our fuel consumption will increase.
I'm looking at having the ECU remapped. The insurance want to charge me an extra 10% for the privilege.

Or shall I just avoid France?

And then have to cough up for the long ferry fares.

We could manage 75kph or less quite comfortably in 6th gear in our previous van (2.2 diesel) weighing almost 4 tonnes and still averaged 28 mpg over thousands of miles in France.
I can only see reduced fuel consumption being the norm with the reduced limits. Even 5th gear at 80kph with a light right foot should be economical
How much would a remap + increased insurance cost and how many miles would you have to cover to get the money back?

I purchased a 2nd Hand Tunit Device

It simply plugs in to the Engine management system (thus becoming a T -Junction)
Has a dial so you can choose a setting (1 to 9 , 1 is most economy)
I set it to no 3
I believe this is similar to re-mapping
I informed my Insurers.......... no problem no cost

Difficult to be sure but overall performance (power smoothness) and low end torque may well be better.
But it maybe that my right foot skills have improved?

No totally reliable figures before but Values from 25 to 28 mpg
This has been in place since 2015 and reliable figures go from 28mpg to 32.
Thus an average average of 29.5 thus a 10% saving
Now we do 6000 to 8000 a year
7000/29.5 = 238 gallons = 1100 litres
1100 litres @ £1.25 = £1364 so an estimated saving of £136 pa x 2.5 years £341
The unit cost about £100
Again "Right foot skill" may be a contributory factor together with a nominal self-imposed limit of 57mph

France is definitely more expensive than the UK for many things just at the moment, fuel being one of them. Petrol here at my local garage is at least €1.60 a litre. The things that are cheaper are wine and property.

Pity really, because there is only one of those items that most of us would buy regularly.
