Wow must have been some strong winds.

Our most frightening night in the van was In the Great Storm of October 1987 we were parked on the North Coast of Scotland in the layby just after Rispond, I'm sure many members know the Layby on the left overlooking a fantastic bay and Sandy beach when travelling towards Durness it used to be a regular overnight spot for us from the late 60's onwards at that time you got no bother from locals many would stop for a chat as not many motor caravans were seen at that time women with family's would stop to show children the wee house on wheels where ever we went. We were woken up in the night we took an enormous amount of buffering the wind was so strong we dare not move the van and even then where could we go for shelter, TV coverage was unheard of in those days and newspapers 3 days late it was not until we reached Fort William that we heard of the Hurricane.

I know that layby well Alf, I also remember that night well. I was stuck in London after work trying to get a train home but even there it was dangerous to be in the streets with debris and roof tiles flying about.

Poor old Michael Fish will always be remembered for that.

We parked on Ramsey promenade one breezy night. Next morning I'd never known the van move so much in the wind. Whilst it was a very windy day the reason it was so bad for us was that we were opposite the end of a street, which was funneling the wind directly at us. We decided to find somewhere more sheltered and within yards the wind had halved.
