Would this happen in the UK?

Conversely, my daughter and her husband and 2 kids toured Italy last year in their VW camper and got nothing but rudeness pretty much everywhere that they went, both from campsite staff and Italian campers.

It has been suggested that they may have been taken for Germans, apparently the Italians and Germans aren't the best of friends?
Probably. In the 1960s we used to wildcamp across Europe in our VW camper, and frequently encountered initial hostility until the people realised we were British, not German.
Of course now, Brits are treated with a sort of resigned sympathy because of ******.

@barryd The road leaving Collobrieres to the east is fine in a large 'van.

Two years ago the road into the village was closed for a few days whilst I was parked and the only option was to head east.

It really wasn't a problem, though it did mean a long drive to Le Lavandou which is another favourite place to stay (Winter only by the marina).

Tonight I'm parked at the Col de Babaou, fabulous views, but the road south from here is definitely not suitable for motorhomes. I know from experience!

They used to be good buddies.

I guess they are all possible just not as easy. First time we came we came over the top from the road from the north east. Luckily it was early morning and dead quiet but it took an age.

I travelled along the D14 to Grimaud, perhaps you used the D39 from Gonfaron ...

That looks narrow on Google Maps.

Diesel is pricey, wouldn't call other stuff expensive though, unless in a top tourist spot, same as other places.

Many years ago (1970s) my friend and I walked into a souvenir type shop in the south of France. The lady looked at us very suspiciously and asked my friend if she was Italian, to which she replied that she was English, the lady then asked if I was German and I said that I was English too. She suddenly became much more friendly and couldn't do enough for us. It seems they hated the Germans & the Italians in those days, can't imagine why. ;)

They did say diesel was very pricey Mark, but yes they did go to the touristy type places. But they did say it seemed more expensive than France, Switzerland and Germany. I've never been to Italy, so I don't really know how it compares.

Speaking of ice cream though @trevskoda they did get charged the equivalent of 18 quid for 4 ice creams in Venice!
