Wildcamping protocol

Hi are you one of these people who drive in fast, head to the amenities and back and get it all sorted quick? Or maybe you prefer to cruise in slowly, park off and watch what's going on before you decide to stay somewhere?

It's not only about parking though is it. That's only the start...

Personally don't give a toss, do my own thing mindful of course my actions could impinge on others...

But I wild as a lifestyle, not a social statement.

Well, we tend to eye a place up, perhaps having a break there during the day & returning later quietly. But we have just slipped into places late on after rejecting several earlier ones if travelling on rather than exploring an area.

Not sure what you mean by amenities tho, wilding usually seems to mean there won't be any!

We were in a nice spot the other week & another van arrived & asked if we were staying. When we said yes, they were delighted & decided to stay too. Apparently the lady felt more secure with other vans around.

A common occurence I find...happened twice last week.

Tbh I could be irritated in I like my space, flip side is I guess especially if newbies...you are helping build confidence.

I know of a member here that after a fortniight wanted to sell their van...totally out of their comfortzone wilding..

They got over it and as we speak hopefully having the time of their lives

only use amenities on camp sites, tend to steer clear of other areas, preffer to find spots like forests,so i can deploy the cammo net to
cover the scenic,

if its shiny others can see it if its hidden u will be alone and not bothered.

only issue now is to paint the relay olive drap and then deploy the cammo net.

How many times have we seen the "Strength in Numbers" statement on other forums (probably not this one!). What? Do they think Im going to come and rescue them when the evil wild camper axe murderer comes along? No. I will be running in the other direction throwing them and their children behind me! ;)

I agree with you though. If it makes people feel safer and encourage them to get into it then that must be a good thing. I must admit there have been some places I have felt better that other vans were there but I tend to like the place to ourselves not just for solitude or selfish reasons but wild spots can very quickly start to look like Aires or even campsites!

For those of you who feel reassured when you park next to another campervan, always bear in mind that it may be the axe-murderer himself in there!! :scared:
(but don't have nightmares!) :)

I'm the same as Channa. I don't take much notice of what other people are doing. I just make sure I'm quiet and clear up after myself.

Do they have amenities at wildcamping locations? I've never noticed any apart from the odd toilet block in a lay-by ;)

All for people joining us but please leave room to open the door and I really don't want to hear other peoples night time goings on.

I, personally, want to get into wild camping, but at the moment, I need to be at work during the day, so have to leave the motorhome, so am using camp sites. Going to North wales soon, so will hopefuly check out some good sites.

These axe murderers, they'll take pity on middle aged men with glasses wont they?

while we were in portugal a middle aged dutch couple parked near a young couple of spanish, the girl was a dance teacher i think.anyway they got on well, then the young couple tied them up got their pin numbers and killed them, mainly to nick their camper which they were caught repainting.the bodies were dumped at a barragem behind messines. keep your wits about you

Thanks, that story should ensure me several more empty parking spots!!

To put it all into perspective though, I'd think that statistics would show that many more people are attacked or robbed in their own homes than they are in motorhomes. And I don't want to cause mass panic, but for added safety I'd advise everyone to get out of their houses and sleep in a layby! :)

i suppose it was a bit doomy, but stuff happens everywhere, and while not wanting to put people off, everything you do can be dangerous, including getting out of bed in the morning.complacency can cause you grief[ask any 4 fingered carpenter]

By amenities I mean toilet, bins, tap, stream or river, anything that's going to be helpful to you.

Fairy Nuff, but for me the best wild spots are truly wild & altho I have used litter bins & toilets when they are there, I don't seek them for overnighting. For me the whole point of a well equiped outfit is the self-sufficiency for several days at a time so I can get well off the beaten track. My wife with a 1:50k OS map is my best aid, followed by a good pair of eyes (& a sat-nav for a relaxed trip from A to B).
