Wild Camping????

Hi Guys some of you have met me... lol
I have a CARAVAN plus a selection of tents from 3 to 8 berth.

Wild camping is not practicle with a caravan, but it would be with my estate car, combined with an annex or drive away awning. Or do I need to get myself a van as well...

I am looking at using the car as a sleeping pod... with an annex as a cooking/ washing and general living area... so now over to you pros.. would this be a viable option to wild camping ?
 
cant see why its not practical with your caravan i do it in my mini artic . but then possibly i blend in with the others . just do it .its easy .
 
as vwalan says ,i dont see why you cannot wild camp with a car and caravan.when we were living in our van down here in wales ,we met a couple with a child more than once that used to do it .there also was a young couple had an escort van and they used that with a awnining made out of a tent that fitted on the rear of the van ,their van was the sleeping quarters and the tent they used for cooking and sitting during the day .we intend to convert a seat alhambra and use that. so i suppose you can use anything realy , in fact even a medium sized pick up truck with a tent made to fit the rear area will do the options seem endless .ps there was a guy we used to meet quite often that used an old volvo estate for sleeping in so depending on what you want be it the odd night away or an extended break then its up to the individuals needs and his or hers pocket.
 
I get a a little disturbed with the motorhome factor guys... cos I aint got that sort of money...lol

So living out of an estate car WOULD SUFFICE THEN ? with an extention / drive away awning.... the porta potty stays outsuide..pmsl now..

but you dont have to spend anything like that . i used a vw t25 pickup with a canvas back for years just looked like a workers truck never had a problem. i only pasyed 1650 for my trailer and the vwlt that used to pull it . cost a few grand to convert it but that was 12 years ago . built the mitsubishi out of our local grave diggers tipper that didnt cost the world .we also used to wild with a trike and a teardrop . that was the worst as folk were al.ways wanting to sit on the trike . waking us up. use a caravan . buy one for 100quid and get the comfort and pleasure . paint it green or something . marroon is a good colour . put some sort of emblem on it . looks like a charity caravan then. or an office for a club . stealth by deception is the way.essex walker association or something .
 
plenty of vans out there for under 1500 quid or even less that are perfectly serviceable if you want to buy one cheap then do it up whilst you use it . my old bedford was only 2k and we had a good 6 years running out of it to tell the truth if family comitments haddent forced its sale i would still be running it .in fact it has just sold again this weekend on ebay . so if you are handy with a few tools you can have a perfectly good camper without spending pots of cash .and to tell you the truth i feel more proud of a viehcle that i have restored and made look good than going out and paying thousands for one .my alhambra i have now was a dog inside, filthy and the paint work was terrible in fact it looked worse than some that are in the scrap yards , now people comment how nice it looks .
 
Currently on the road in Norway and I have seen *many* 'wildcamping' caravans! Some people put them on a 'pitch' then leave in their car and come back later. :D
 
if you have enough money for a car,and want a camper,then a well used transit or old merc could be a possible.you don't need to be thinking of seventy grand blimey.theres an iveco advertised on here for 3 and a half,for example,but you can go a whole lot cheaper than that,my son bought a rusty old transit for 600quid,scraped through the mot and had a good year's fun with it before weighing it in for about 200
 
multiple options

I have at the moment a old Bedford coach but I am in the process of replacing it with a ex MAN race truck. I can park in laybys and truck stops without being bothered ! I also have a landrover 110 with oztent and a hard top Sankey trailer that I am converting to sleep in and have a small stove and sink but I would only use this setup for camp sites, pub stops and off road wild camping .

Hi Rebel camper,
I used a honda Civic aerodeck, estate car (still have the car but have now bought an 06 Transit Van and am converting) and bought a rip stop nylon 'tarpaulin' with eyelets from B&Q. With the hatch up and a couple of hooked bungee cords attached to the tarp and the rear wheel arches and pulled over the open hatch together with two home made poles and guy ropes I had a very serviceable awning. I had a two burner camping stove and a plastic storage box which both sat on the front passenger seat when camping.
I didn't have a porta potty though. When wild it was a small shovel, otherwise I would go on small sites and pay as a tent camper in order to use facilities. No camp site owners ever complained and at one site in Cumbria the owner even offered to lend me a tent as he felt a little sorry for me. Heaven knows why.
Going off topic for a moment (I do this all the time) I borrowed the tent out of courtesy and set it up. He told me he hadn't used it for two or more years and whilst the tent was sound, I found a pair of crusty old socks in a storage pouch in the tent which I simply left there and later returned the tent without mentioning them. I just know that when he next uses that tent (if he hasn't already)he will find the socks and assume they are mine. It still makes me smile to think about it.
Anyway there are advantages to using an estate car, easier parking and access, cheap and cheerful campsites and up and away in minutes. but there is more to be said for a van conversion.

what i have seen over the last month for sale on ebay is a couple of mk1 ford galaxys ,they had been converted by a company into 2berth campers compleat with lift up roofs as per bongos .nowthen you can pick a good galaxy /sharan/or alhambra up for well under a grand ,these convertions have sold for going on 4k .i suppose the fuel consumption with these mpv is attractive, mine can get roundabout 45 miles from a gallon of diesel local running ,and around 60 on a run depending on your driving style .mine also has a diesel heater fitted for the rear saloon heater .
 
I paid a grand for my camper and comes with toilet, shower,fridge,2 ring burner plus grill and hotplate,also has hot and cold water with the biggest bed ever and isurance is £126 for year.So i wouldnt say you need to spend a fortune on a mototrhome you could easily spend more than that on a caravan or some tents ive seen these days.

Personally, I think the caravan is best, PROVIDED you can find a good, secure, site that enables detachment and the freedom to travel about unfettered.

The truck, estate, big van, etc. are a compromised variation on this theme, but may allow that extra degree of freedom.
Maybe it all depends on what you value most in life.

It sounds like there are members on here with every possible type of vehicle, of all ages and values. We can all drool over the 70 grand marvels but some of the best vans I've seen and admired are either really old ones with bags of character and strength or amazing self-builds/restorations that have been choc full of clever ideas and personal touches. No matter how you go about it, it's getting out there that counts. Why not give the car a go... see how you get on. Good luck Rebel :)

With so many varied ideas being put to me, I am not one to sit back and let everyone do the work for me.

So I too, have been doing some research, into what would possibly suit me as a wild camper.

At the recent campfest, I came across TWO of the most unlikely pieces of kit, that I would want to buy. Nothing about them looked good, both plain and drab... apart for the basic use as a tent. I had not given them a second thought, untill I started this thread.

All I could remember was RV TENT... and the numbers 02.

I have since found out, with serious searching, that these tents were in fact OZTENTS... RV models.

In searchng and watching the videos... I think I have found the Ideal piece of kit for me and the missus.
As a 58year old camper, I need something, that is easy to put up, and quick to pack up... and 30 seconds each way suits me.

I have 2, 8 berth tents, that take such a seemingly long time to erect and even longer to pack down.

A caravan, which is great, ......

But I also have an old Trailer Tent... which I will be using as a trailer... for all my camping gear including this

Oh well thats me outta the WILD Camping scene, as ive not got a MOTOR HOME.
 
Had an OZ tent once, Ebay find, luckily sold it for what I paid for it. OZ tents have been very popular for a number of years especially at 4x4 & expedition types of shows. They look the part,and thats about it. I think there over priced and a waste of space. They really do sound much better then they are. Ok, the main part does go up very quick, all the additional bits are not so fast, they are huge when packed as well. Out of the 5 or 6 people I know who have bought them over the last 6 years, no one uses them anymore, all been sold on ebay.

For fast and easy pitching, these make a lot more sense then a OZ tent, they just don't look the part though.

heres a couple of my roof tent. on my old vw t2 .andaghain on my mazda bongo tin top . also my teardrop .or bed in a shed as i call it . the roof tent does sort of give the game away . think some might realise we are camping . ha ha .
