Wild camping spot in or near Ypres belgium

Hi guys thinking on paying a visit to an uncles war grave near Ypres just wondered if any good spots near

We were there last November and though we stayed at Camping Ypra a bit outside town there were many vans parked up near the sports centre in the town itself with apparently no problems even on Remembrance Day looking out over the town moat. at the south eastern side of the town.

Stopped in Ypres last sept as you approach the menim gates turn left then go past the houses and there are parking places on the left.Also a campsite just further up near the sports centre but the road is blocked off just before the sports centre so you have to enter by the top road.Leopold 111 laan is the parking and Camping Jeugdstadion the campsite .

We stayed there. Ideal and pretty quiet. Walking distance to the Menin Gate. Its worth a visit up the road to Tyne Cot Cemetery which I think is the biggest war grave cemetery in the world. Very moving. The Yorkshire Trenches in Ypres are worth a look. They are free but strangely on an industrial estate.

When I was there there were also many vans at the car park at the bottom end of that road accessed from the sports stadium access road

We were there a couple of years ago in October on a very wet day en route home. For various reasons We ended up staying on the campsite by the stadium which as others have said is well within walking distance. The campsite was an eye opener for us, being the first automated booking and entrance system we have encountered. On arrival you enter the lobby where a touchscreen system sorts out whether you want grass or hard standing, shows you the available pitches on a map and then sorts out the electric. To book you use a credit/debit card and it then spits out a hotel style door card which you then use to swipe the entrance barrier. Cute!!

The ceremony at the Gate was very moving and inspiring and despite it being a cold, wet October night, there must have been at least 150 people there including a lot of youngsters.
