We will be heading to Germany shortly - any suggestions for wifi. If I remember right, you couldn't log in at McDs without a password being sent to German phone number.
Any other places would be useful if anyone has any.
We've been using 3 mobile since 1st March in France and Spain but Germany isn't on the 'feel at home list'.

We used the WIFI in Germany inside McDonalds. We seem to recall that there was a password involved, but we do not have German mobiles so obviously did not need one. Not sure if there was a drop down to select your country or if it was emailed and it enabled you to log in to get it.

The password for McDonalds is mcdonalds, but we bought a sim from German Vodafone for €10 data only and it was loads, ho hassle involved,, and they all speak English as far as I know.

McDonalds wifi works fine and no need for a German SIM or number. UK phones/tablets etc. can easily access this and usually works well. We've done it many times with a variety of iPhones and iPads.

Wi FI germany

Jenny, if you do need a code for German wi FI at McDonalds, it can be sent to your UK mobile without problem, but you may only get one hour, so if you have 2 separate mobile numbers, you can get 2 hours daily, same in Swiss, plus nearly all tourist info office have good wi FI, and in some places free local authority hotspots.........if there's 2 in your van, one can monitor the tablet for free wi FI as you drive through places........Steve bristol

3 works perfectly in Germany. And Spain, Portugal and France. Don't know about the Balkans.

If you have BT Internet and have not opted out of Fon, you can connect to Fon WiFi in Germany (provided through Deutsche Telekom).

I gave a friend by BT Openzone FON details and he was in Germany last week and reckoned he could access the FON network there. He seemed to think it was just four hours. In the past I never found FON connections there but perhaps its recently been expanded.

Coverage can be sparse in places. See Fon - Maps - Fon
In France, for example, coverage (through Fon's partner SFR) is far better in towns and cities than in small village, where people tend to have remained with the legacy operator, Orange.
As for time limits, I would be surprised if there is a limit, but in France SFR disconnects you after 1-2 hours and you have to sign in again. May be that Deutsche Telekom does the same after 4 hours.

Yes my experience of Germany in the past was that FON was sparse and open wifi rare. It was just the fact that my friend who is there now was telling me that FON was available more than it was before so I wondered if things had changed.

The Fon network in France grew very quickly a few years ago as SFR opted all their users in by default and you had to opt out if you didnt want to be part of the network. Before that it was the other way around and FON was hard to find. Of course nobody bothered to opt out so it now works brilliantly in France.

Hiya Carol - Don't want hassle of looking for fuel in France - it'll have to France Passion sites another time.
John's got his way - looking at Motorhomes. Only looking mind lol

I've booked the ferry for 29th June - got a £20 meal deal in with it. Heard from Bill And Sonia and Alison and Stan yesterday. Judy and Paul are now living in Spain.

Just back from Germany. Yes, free wifi in McDonalds and no password required but limited to one hour.
