Well folks Ive updated all I can on my VW T6. Its as secure as I can make it and kitted out. I've found a company for my Internet connection and the bits and pieces I may need but given Im good mechanically but about as much use as a chimp when it comes to electrics here's my choices with my pop top roof.

Do I want 4g or 5g? I don't know but folks in other places say 4g is currently a better choice.
Do I want a PUCK (Better in higher ranges, urban, cities etc
MIMO 3 better in low ranges , mountains country
MIMO 4 middle of the two, ok urban ok country.
Also recommended cables 4x4 for 5g 2x2 4g.
Finally Teltonika routers, any good and can be powered by 12v campers.

Thanks again for any advice

The first one was blocked by AI as with no text it suspected spam.

Pop top should be an advantage when it comes o signal for a router, no faraday cage effect, (or much less), you may not need an additional antenna. 5G will receive 4G but 5G equipment more expensive, if that isn't a concern I would go with 5G, its what I have at home.

Teltonika gear is good, its what I run in the van, I do have a puck antenna on the roof but for the last 18 months or so I haven't bothered using it, just use the stick antenna's on the router itself.

Went for a Netgear Nighthawk after advise from a member.
Use it with an EE sim and to date have always had a signal on my travels. Bought antennas which I’ve never had to use. If my live in daughter and son in law weren’t paying for our home Virgin WiFi at I would just use the Nighthawk.
Before the Netgear tried a Telonika Rut and ended up sending it back for a refund. The Nighthawk is in another league for performance, ease of use etc, etc.
Netgear not the cheapest but well worth the money in my opinion.

Might be a dumb question, but why all this gear? The phone has all it needs to receive a signal if there is one there to pick up. We're on holiday, nothing pressing that requires us to be in touch 24/7, and if you don't have a signal, so what.

I have used a Teltonika RUT955 (4G) on a 12V supply for some years with a fair degree of success. Of course, it does also depend on choice of network. More recently, I have experimented with ZTE MiFi units while touring France and have found them generally very good - placed on a shelf in the dash.
If buying now, I would certainly look to a 5G unit for futureproofing. The last time that I looked for a Teltonika 5G unit, they were very expensive. 5G MiFi units vary in price and many of the cheaper units that claim to be 5G are in fact not 5G mobile data but 5GHz WiFi signal. I am currently using a ZTE U30Air (5G/4G/3G) and finding it generally very good. There have been a couple of places where I have had to specify the generation of signal that I wish to use for stability of connection, which I put down to (SFR) network coverage.

5g can carry more data BUT the range is not as good as 4g. 5g is typically best for densely populated areas like central cities where you can have multiple antennas beaming out data at mega speeds. In rural/ semi rural areas unless you happen to be close to a 5G mast then 4g is probably your best bet.
We've just ditched our broadband supplier and bought a cheap £50 ZTE 4g router and a 3 unlimited data SIM for £15 a month, pretty decent speeds with the built in antennas on the router because we're only about 300m from a mast. I took the router out of the house and put it into the van (it's 12v too) and connected it to the 4g antenna which I have on the van roof.
Decent speeds for a camper!

Decent 5G router, dual sim plus esim easy VPN setup for most of the main providers, lots of plugins and at a reasonable price if you can get one before they sell out again 🤔

Del

Well, no, it couldn't, could it Kev, but I did ask why. No one bothered to answer.

Apart from the very odd day when we had no signal parked up for the night, one of us has usually had enough to do whatever we've needed to do, and there is then the bonus that we get peace and quiet.
