Can anyone clarify the overnight parking arrangements in the Whitby area at the marine carpark? I have read that the council have banned overnighting but that people are ignoring the ban and that a bloke is lobbying the council to try and get them to change their rules!
Any help gratefully received.

I enquired with the council earlier this year, Think it was January.
Informed no overnighting allowed but as you mentioned I think people are just ignoring it.
I just park up for the night on the moors. it's quiet, scenic and you can just drive into Whitby in the morning and park up.

Do you, as your name suggests, come from the Oban area? Reason being we are thinking of going over to Mull later this year and was wondering what the parking in Oban is like too.
Thanks again for your help.

No, if only I did !
My late wife and I spent a lot of time in the area hence I use the name.

We went to Oban a few weeks ago and we didn't park up there we just did a bit of shopping in Tescos and had a look around, what I will tell you if you park in the car park across from Tescos there is spaces for Motorhomes and caravans make sure you park in those bays do not park in the long bays for lorries or you will get a parking ticket!! We got one and a few others as well as there were no parking spaces left!!!

Thanks guys,
I wish GB had a more French like attitude to Moho' s and campers. We are positively welcomed there with open arms ( and Aires), unlike places here where we are faced with fines and height barriers.
But, I'm sure it will come

A think it's about time the Motorhome retailers start getting councils to provide Aires etc as they are making loads of cash from the boom in motorhoming, maybe manufacturers could provide,?

this is rip off england ,as they say in yorkshire. Theirs. Nowt for Nowt.

Hi we went to Mull earlier this month, we stayed overnight in one of the Forestry commission car parks called Strone hill, (there are others), this is en route to Oban from Tyndrum.

Thanks for that. It looks like a lot of the forestry commission carparks would be ok for parking in, it's if anyone from the forestry would object. Although, with the right to roam laws in Scotland, I'm not sure if they could ask you to move??

Trouble with putting information about parking spots on the public part of the forum is next time you go to you favourite stop it's overrun with MH's . If you join the community you can find all the nice spots that members use. If you don't then you have to find your own. The Council will not let you park in Whitby and have a warden who comes out at night and issues tickets.

AS for my favourite places to stay they will remain a closely guarded secret then next time I want a free weekend away I won't have to share it with 20 other MH's who all read it on here

..

Ouch ! Thought as a full member it would be OK to ask . Question was about Saltburn anyway.

We parked overnight on The Marina car park a couple of weeks ago but it was Goth weekend. The car park resembled an overcrowded campsite. Not a space anywhere. They were also overnighting on the coach park without any problems. Apparently a warden has to come out from Scarborough to issue any tickets. I'd personally risk it again at The Marina.

a few scottish forestry sites have 'no overnighting' signs, I dont know how well they are policed because anywhere there is a sign I dont park (I dont care about the legality or otherwise of the sign if Im not wanted I dont stay).

I have stayed in a great many forestry car parks, never had a problem from any one, I think twice I have been there (having obviously been there all night) and workers have come in and no one ever said anything, that isnt to say that it is permitted only that it is at least tolerated.

Most often the only people you will see are dog walkers - its amazing that no matter how remote the carpark dog walkers will appear out of no where!

Anybody got recent experience at Saltburn ?

People regularly overnight in the Cat Nab carpark, it's the big carpark at the bottom of the bank next to the beck. There are a couple of larger spaces opposite Camfields cafe, I use them if I'm down for the day. Parking is free on Sundays in winter and also between 6pm and 8am every day. An all day ticket lasts 24 hours. When the weather's fine, the carparks fill up very quickly.

The larger spaces are in the top left of the carpark.
