Which TV aerial

Well the aerial fitted by Elddis is worse than useless so I'm upgrading. Any thoughts as to which of the Status aerials I should get the 550 short one, or 560 long one Status - TV Antenna/Aerial Shop

If there isn't much difference in performance I'm minded to go for the shorter one rather than using up valuable (so my wife tells me) wardrobe space?

thank you
Ian

Aerial

I don't have a status aerial and probably never will, mainly because I think they are well overpriced and I'm not all that fussed if I watch tele or not.

Having said that, if I were to be replacing a status aerial I would consider using the existing mast and sticking one of these on it.

DigiDome Outdoor Aerial - Overview & Installation - YouTube

I have one of these at home and it works a treat. The amplifier is built into the 'mushroom' and supplied by a little 12v power unit in the house. So,it looks like a very similar set up to the status. From my experience the DVB signal is pretty good all over the country and we just use an old Phillips indoor aerial and sometimes have to stick it out of the roof vent in a plastic bag.

If it looks alright to you £35 is going to be worth a punt I reckon. You could always use it at home if it proves to be a bit flaky. Just watched that Youtube video and the power unit looks different to mine, probably just an older or newer variant. The little gadget that connects the 12v supply on mine is a small rectangular, metal box with three connections 12v in,coax to aerial and coax to tele.

Cheers

Harold

Status are very good aerials and if i was you i would go for the one with the Longer Pole.

It really can make a difference if you can get the aerial higher especially in fringe areas.

Something else you might want to consider is one of these :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/FRINGE-TV-SAT-SIGNAL-FINDER/dp/B002HGQ81U

They make homing in on a signal really easy, you plug it in and turn on, raise your aerial turn on the booster and rotate the aerial until you get
the maximum amount of lights lit and the highest pitched whistle, that`s it easy.

We have a status aerial and it is very good. I would definitely go for the longer one. In poor areas it's surprising how just even a few inches higher makes a big difference.

I have the Status 550 and it is excellent, I would have preferred the longer version but I could not mount it above my wardrobe so I only had an overhead locker to drop the pole in, even though I have never failed to get a perfect signal since the digital upgrade for the extra money I would go for the 560 if you have room for the pole

Thanks all. I'm going to go for the 550 or 560 because my dealer has knocked £100 off because I wasn't happy that the one supplied with the Motorhome was useless. I will go for the longer one IF I can persuade the wife to lose a bit of wardrobe space (I see that it's got 865mm locker intrusion).

I know its not very pretty, but ive made a mast of approx. 6mts from those tubular coat racks/wardrobes with a bog standard ariel affixed to the top with bungies. You can use the adjustable brackets to fix each section to and then attach it to the bike rack, if you have one. I also have a Satus 550 and find it no where near as good as my Heath Robertson contraption. I have had some strange looks ,but hey ,who gives a shxt. Eat your heart out Goonhilly Downs. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

I've had the status short pole on my last 2 vans and never not got a signal.

I think your comment is a little unfair, firstly it is not a lash up as it works perfectly well and is not at all unsightly and secondly I always thought that the whole point of wilding and all the other things that go with it was ,and I stand corrected, to save money and that is why we all wild, to save money or have I missed something really important.

Are you turning it to find a strong signal and retuning your TV for the area you are in?, I bought the Status when they first came out and mine doesn't have a meter built in the same as the modern ones but using a separate meter I have not failed to get a strong signal anywhere, if it was just the one van I would have thought you had a problem with the ariel but that is doubtful with two vans

You've miss read my quote, I said that, I've had the status short pole on my last 2 vans and never NOT got a signal.

Sorry John, in my defence I have spent the evening enjoying the company of a case of Tetley Bitter and watching football, not at my best for noticing too much but extremely happy, I agree with you though because if you read my post earlier I have never had a problem either, since we have gone completely digital you have more problem from a signal that is too strong

That is why you have a low and high power setting on the aerial amplifier so you can turn it down if you have a strong signal
I couldn't be bothered typing it out so I copied and pasted this

I was a serious hifi buff for many years: Quad amp, SME arm, electrostatic speakers etc., and I learnt a lot about amplifier overload and the associated distortions!
Surely everyone else does.....?

You were so close to the truth grass hopper, many on here wild camp because we don’t want to be near others, then there are those that nobody wants to be near.:cool1:

I saved a fair bit by making my own in the end as I couldn't afford the status stuff

I used an old aluminium oar as the mast, an aquatic 25mm tank coupler to go the through the roof and slide the pole through and a plunger head to keep the weather from going down the ole

I get a fantastic picture, and can turn it from inside the wardrobe :hammer:
