which security device?

If you obtain the GISC (General Insurance Standards Council) statistics, theft to M/H are from opertunists, whom are after snatch and grab items such as TV's Laptops etc. Deadlocking will not stop them climbing through a Plastic window and not everyone as a fairly good and realiable dog to deal with the herberts!! My dogs are the case as they would be waging tails thinking "oh new person.....you going to feed us!!!"
Good immobilisation will cetainly slow the process in vehicle theft, but still doesn't address the above issue.
People say that alarms are ignored.............. not true in my option if you pick the right one and spec it to your requirements (unfortunately flame throws and torture devices are not available/legal in this country ;) ).
Spec of My Swift is both internal and external sirens, coupled with paging to the mobile, should I have the ability to act on the text I.e come out of the shopping centre/call neigbour/down to the storage facility etc etc.

we use a disklok on the steering wheel

had a cobra alarm fiited this we regret as its not up to much, wished we had paid the extra £150 and got a van bitz alarm

I suppose with our reply, we must be in the minority :)

My attitude is simple, if they really want it, they'll probably get it.

As a HGV Class 1 Driver I have always been of the opinion that if thieves want it they will know how to get it. 40ft containers stripped by thieves in under 5 minutes, diesel tanks emptied in 3 minutes etc, etc.
So personally I don't care what they do just as long as no one gets hurt.

So with that in mind, our motorhome is legal, insured, has satellite tracking, immobilizer, fuel cut off and is replaceable unlike human life.

So when we wild, when we go out on trips in the deep forests of Britain or France when we return, if our motorhome is there, it's there, if not then it's not.

It may be a strange attitude to most of you but I feel that too many people lose out on life by worrying about what you have got and protecting it, rather than what you have not got or experienced.

I personally do not see the point in driving to a location and sitting there all day worrying if there is a thief about when you can be out discovering your surroundings and experiencing what your location has to offer you.

For 3 days we left our motorhome in a forest and everyday we went off exploring for a good 6 to 8 hours each day.

Never saw another soul and never had any problems.

In all my years as a lorry driver, as a wild parker, I have never ever had any problems or had anything nicked.

I have even left the motorhome parked unlocked as I forgot to lock it in a busy city centre all day and it wasn't touched and I have done this a couple of times

You can spend money, you can secure your property as much as you like, but at the end of the day if someone wants it, they'll probably get it.

Just my point of view and opinion.

Life is for living, not for worrying about :)

Agree

Got to agree with you, crime is not that bad, leaving valuables in view would tempt the casual thief but in general crime is relatively rare. Same point of women alone wildcamping, it is very rare that crime occurs but their is always the unlucky few!

Most is in the minds of the Middle Classes who fall foul of the propaganda of this government and media who clearly want the advantage of the public living in fear. Most are simple money making schemes!

We were broke into 3 years ago in landudno near to tc , were only gone for 45 minutes to get some calor, they must have been waiting for us to leave the mh had ,,look outs etc, We felt the mh had been violated the kids were very upset we lost all our family photos on the cameras which were stolen What did I learn the hard way?? and this is what i put into practice at all times...
1. be very cicumspect where you park, we parked in a pretty lane felt safe nr to tc , we now try to park where there is more pedestrians/traffic flow ,possibly a cctv , or of course where other mhs park up as we all look out for each
2.dont leave mh longer than necessary
3.dont leave expensive tvs etc on show (cover them)
4. hide your all valuables under bedding etc when leaving mh
5.try to make mh look as if someone is in , ie bedroom area curtains drawn radio up loud etc
6.the biggest factor which i,ve not seen anyone point out before! we parked adjacent to a 5ft high stone wall , now this was perfect cover ,as vehicle is 25 ft long for them to gain access through the middle window without being seen, fortuantly they forced the window but there was no damage.
7. fit an immobilser,(could be just a cheap switch ) www.wildcamping.co.uk/forums/motorhome-problems/8481-cut-off-switch.html so they dont take whole vehicle
8.make sure your contents insurance is adaquate
9. your vehicle is much more at risk when wildcamping compared to being on a cc cite for example
10. a nice loud alarm

Hi Steve
Can't disagree with anything youve said all good advise but I would urge that people do not get complacent on CC and CC&C sites.

Unfortunatey it's thought that there are profesional theives joining the clubs in order to stay on sites and then steal during there stay :eek:

But I would think this also includes any large site, people seem to get very lax on large sites and forget that they know nothing of the people camping next to them , leaving money, passports and god knows what in their vans and the doors unlocked,

Me, I feel safer wilding :):)

It's funny how you guys mention theft on club sites. We have recently come back from the Shepton Mallet show and it is sad to report that a few individuals took it upon themselves to take items from other people's vans, whilst the poor victims were enjoying the show.
Just goes to show that it's best to make sure your investment and property is properly protected.
