Has anyone got any suggestions for the best security device - steering wheel lock etc etc - for when we leave the MH unattended whilst out walking in the hills for example.

I use a steering wheel lock, ignition immobiliser and a front wheel clamp. Make them visible and the casual thief will move on. He can still get in but is less likely to take the van. Just in case anyone thinks I am a little paranoid, I have had two cars, a van, two mountain bikes and a skateboard stolen, and our camper was written off after a would be thief tried to steal it!!

leave the keys in the ignition ,the doors unlocked and a wallet full of £20 notes with a msg 'help yourselves!'

wonder how many peeps would?

Clutch Claw. Stearing wheel lock. Also fitted a deadlock on the drivers door.

Back in the 70s I ran a small fleet of minibusses and a 29 and 45 seater coach from my home. We never took the keys out and if anyone wanted them moved they would get in and move them. Our house was never locked until I was in my mid 20s.

Best things to get are to layer your security..am speaking from fitting security systems to a lot of cars and vans..Clutch claw is a good one if a little hard to fit and remove which is a good thing as slows someone down...and if you can fit a fuel shut of valve either a electric version or a tap version inline on the main fuel line. This will allow the engine to be started, the thief will start to move and it will then cut out hopefully blocking a road this makes it even more visible its being taken(note to yourself dont forget it there)A battery isolator switch on the starting battery
A decent aftermarket immobilisor and alram.clifford cobra or scorpion are all good makes dont bother with a 2 wire ones as easily removed..the best will take a few hours to be fitted.

This may not be the answer you want to hear but DONT leave you van unattended while wilding. We have been lucky in that in ten years of this life we have only been broken into once but that is enough. We have met - as most of you probably have - many who tell of robbery and if you make life difficult for thieves they are just as likely to wreck the van in retaliation, so no security device will stop them. Dogs are no deterent - they know how to silence them. Chains between the doors, steering wheel locks and bolts on the doors are no good if your windows can easily be opened. And, of course, we all know that no-one pays any attention to a car alarm (they only have value in reducing your insurance premiums). If we want to leave the van unattended we make sure that there are other campers around - the only true safety is in numbers. This may mean using campsites in areas you are not sure of but £10 or so for the night is better than having your van wrecked. Its also better than living in a fortified van that cannot be protected against vandalism by a frustrated thief.

On the other hand, dont have nightmares, as they say, because if you choose your wilding areas well you are perfectly safe.

We all now the cab door lock is rubbish:mad: I have seen some vans with house type locks fitted not sure how to fit them but that could be a good improvment:D

monkey with a gun isssss gooddddddd:rolleyes::rolleyes::D

Recline your drivers seat back rest as far forward as it will go, slide seat as far forward as it will go, drill a 10mm hole through the seat frame and fit a pad lock. Thieves then unable to push seat back or position backrest upright so they are unable to get behind the wheel and drive off.

Good advice,
Another simple thing: drill a small 3mm hole through the cabin doorframe and plastic doorlever; insert a nail, screw, splitpen in it. Even with a key you can not open the door from the outside. You will have to use the leisure door to get in. This one could be foreseen with a Fiamma-bar.
OK you cannot make a fortress of it; but when thieves are not able to get in in 30seconds they normally give up. :(
A dog is not only man's best friend but also a good warning system (especially when you have a couple of Jack Russels thinking they are big dogs only wrapped in too small :D)

I have a removable steering wheel............... It will not stop any body stealing from the van. But the van cant go far.

I made a couple of brackets that I fit over the caravan door pins that effectively deadlock them (they can easily be taken off in an emergency) I bought an alarm lock from Aldi (for use on the bike) but if we are going out walking from the van it fits nicely on the steering wheel, it is very sensitive (much like AJ ) & really make an awful noise when it goes off, I'm a bit deaf & most of these alarms don't bother me but this one hurts my ears , if I'm taking it off the bike I put my crash hat on first as it's difficult to remove without it going off. Like to see somebody try to drive the van off with the racket it makes.
