We have a Kindle and an android tablet, both have maps.me on it.

Which GPS app should we install to use in conjunction with maps.me?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

on the andriod, download Navmii from playstore, its free, all the maps of Europe are free to download, uses gps not wifi so dont need a connection does take up a little memory though all the maps, i use it all the time its works great.

GPS App?

If your devices have GPS built in, then Maps.me should show you your current position, shouldn't it?

If it doesn't, scrap it and get Osmand :)

For checking the status of GPS satellites, how many the device can see, signal strength etc., I use an app called GPS Status, free from the Play store.

Thanks for your reply Morph, we can open the maps on both devices, zoom in and out, change orientation, we can locate our position manually, but we cant get maps.me to do it automatically. So we think that a GPS app may do the trick. :idea-007:

Co-Pilot is the one to go for imo, you can get one country FOC but I paid extra to get all maps.

Not all Kindles have built in GPS chip. If they don't have a GPS chip have a look to see if they have Bluetooth. If they do you can use a Bluetooth GPS unit which sends it's position to your device. I have a Garmin one that works really well. Not cheap but at least it knows where it is. Other handhelds can work out where they are by triangulation using the ariels that they transmit to. It is not that accurate. You may also find that your device does not like working inside as the signal does not penetrate some metals, bricks and thick fibreglass. The remote unit down the front of the dash will have a very clear view of the sky. Download one of the GPS Utilities from Google Play and try it. If it does not work inside take it outside.

Try this one GPS Test - Android Apps on Google Play

I really like Maps.me and I find it fairly easy to upload my own POIs from Wild and Campingcar-Infos.

For getting us there I use and like Sygic. Again I find it straightforward to add POIs.
Although I tried one or two other Apps I have become used to Sygic and their team are good at answering questions.

Have downloaded Navmii onto my phone, it's free and covers 28 countries but you need only install the countries you want. You can set the preferences from walking mode, car, RV/light truck and lorry, only used it in my car so far and it works better than my Garmin. Will try using it in the MH next month when we go to Spain. As it's free its worth looking at.

Agree with all the above. I have been using Co Pilot and Navigator on my smartphone for the last 4 years. Have all the European maps downloaded onto an sd card. I prefer Navigator these days as it lets you pick a spot on the map to navigate to. Great for mystery tours. Very programmable too allowing you to set different parameters for each vehicle. I have one setting titled 'Motorhome fast' giving me main road travel. One I have set for 'Motorhome slow' which only uses 2ndary roads and invariably gives me a beautiful, traffic free meandering route. The free map option for the UK is usefull too as it gives a lot of footpaths. Really good when lost in the woods with the dog and need a route out.

We have three Samsung Galaxy Tab4's with built-in GPS and WiFi.

We use Sygic, found it very good to use and worked well in Europe.

I use maps.me on my tablet with all the poi's bookmarked onto it to get an overview of an area and find wildcamping and canoeing locations. Like the way you can import any kml file to show on the map. Wasn't that impressed with the routing though, it assumes you are in a car and doesn't allow for low bridges, width restrictions etc.

For directions I use the aponia truck nav app. You enter your vehicles height, length, width and gvw and it finds a route avoiding any problems. I was impressed during the free trial period, and bought the full version, if you make a note of the registration key, you can then use it on a second device. I also imported all the wildcamping poi's in gpx format into the apps favourite file. If you have internet connection, it can work around roadworks and traffic jams.

Used it for a year now, good app!
