Why does the edit button disappear?

Good question, and it’s deliberate rather than a fault.

We don’t allow the edit button to remain available indefinitely because one of the most common spam tactics works like this:

• Bots (or humans using them) make perfectly normal-looking posts
• Those posts pass moderation and spam filters
• The poster then comes back later and edits the post to insert spam links, SEO junk, or hidden keywords

To prevent that, we allow members to edit their posts for a limited time only. After that window expires, the post becomes locked.

That said, this isn’t meant to inconvenience genuine members.

If you ever need a post edited:

• You’ve spotted a mistake
• Someone has pointed out an error
• You want wording corrected or clarified

Just contact me, and I’m more than happy to edit it for you. I’ll also tidy the thread if needed (for example, removing replies that only exist to point out the error).

There’s also a second, very human reason for this rule

Occasionally, members have a moment, get frustrated, and go back to editing all their posts to just a full stop because they can’t delete them. That can badly damage long-standing threads—especially ones they started.

Limiting edits helps:

• Protect the quality of old threads
• Prevent knee-jerk “burn it all down” edits
• Give everyone a cooling-off period

If someone genuinely wants content removed after that, I’ll always handle it manually.

So in short:

It’s an anti-spam and thread-protection measure, not a lack of trust in members.
