What does it look like, where do I get one and is it a simple job to change?

Didn't realise there were different ones, duh! To charge the leisure battery from the main battery?

Depends on your van layout mine is in a zig unit self build so not sure where yours would be why do you ask is your leisure battery not charging ???

When I've been driving with the fridge on 12v it's been draining the leisure battery. This has just started happening. When I posted on here it was suggested it could be the relay. I'm completely ignorant when it comes to this but I recently located and changed a fuse when my central locking and electric windows went. I felt so good I thought I'd try and sort this problem myself!

ok when driving and running your fridge it should not use your l/bat it is worked from your van starter battery so it sounds as if you have got the l/bat connected to the wrong terminals what system have you got in your van ???

Hi Carol not sure that is correct either ? main batts don't charge leisure. the alternator does that .So normally you start the engine alternator puts back into the starter battery ..a relay operates and leisure battery gets charged ( I suspect the problem ) switch your fridge to 12 v that triggers a relay which it sounds way you van is wired draws from the leisure battery. (can you work fridge 12v without the engine running ?) Normally you cant but some can the reason you cant is to stop the main batt going flat.

If your leisure battery is going flat odds are it isnt charging so the relay from the alternator to the leisure battery first suspect, if oyu have nothing at all on leisure then the fuse

Hope this helps a little, perhaps not the best explanation in the world

Hi Chana
in my system the fridge is nothing to do with the l/bat it is charged or power given from the alternator via the van battery not sure how mh works as mine is self build, but from what carol says the fridge is running from the l/bat i have not seen this before
??

It could be the relay is stuck linking both batteries find the relays there should be 2 one for charging one for the fridge the fridge should only work with the engine running.
The most popular place for the relays is adjacent to either battery.
Many compressor fridges are now wired from the leisure batteries in order to work when engine OFF.

I don't think it's the wiring....I've had the van over a year and it's just started happening. The 12v only works when the engine is running. What does the relay look like?

My days of being a CARAVAN fitter are way out of date lol funny how in 30 years things change from the single socket to the double socket on caravans my life changed i set up my own company and waved good bye to caravans think i need to do some home work to catch up :sleep-027:

normally like a little black box, about 4cms each side, with 4 or 5 blade connectors coming out one side. these are numbered. trouble is there could be a few of them next to each other. they are held to the body with an ´L´shaped bracket and one screw. changing them is easy enough, but you need to read the spec on the side to see what ampage they are .about 2 quid each in maplins

Post more details of your van Carol, make, model, age etc., somebody might have a similar model and know exactly where it is
situated and whether you have two separate relays for the fridge and leisure battery or a combined one

The best thing to do before changing any thing is get a dc clamp ammeter around the circuits I did this with WVWs transit and found the problem she had with a battery going flat.

Just pop it up any time I'll leave you the key to the tool shed so you can make a start before I get home ;)

Unfortunately different MH manufactures hide the relays in different places so make of MH essential. Had yours been a Fiat based I could have possibly helped. Hopefully somebody more familiar with your MH can assist

are leisure batteries charging

I would put a volt meter on the leisure batteries then start the engine and see if voltage rises first. then ....
